Since opening in 2020 it's received a Bib Gourmand, and its menu celebrates traditional and seasonal Portuguese fare, serving favorites like bacalhau à brás (salt cod with potato and egg) alongside inventive dishes like lobster risotto with plankton soufflé. Pedro dos Leitões

$$

Of the several restaurants specializing in suckling pig, this is the most popular. The size of the parking lot is a dead giveaway that this is no intimate bistro, and the spitted pigs pop out of the huge ovens at an amazing rate (especially in summer). In spite of the volume, quality is maintained.

The house wine—literally cheaper than the bottled water—is a wonderful value and complement to any meal.

Aquário Marisqueira de Espinho

$$ Fodor's Choice

Founded in 1954, this oceanfront restaurant is one of the most traditional in Espinho. There's an enormous variety of fresh seafood ready to be grilled, boiled, or roasted in the oven, as well as bacalhau and various fish stews and rice dishes. Many are large enough to be split between two diners. Customers who want meat can choose between dishes such as roast veal or kid—or there's tripe and bean stew, in case you didn't get enough of that in Porto.

Atlântida

$$ Fodor's Choice

This charming restaurant has an absolutely lovely location on the eastern edge of the dramatic Praia dos Três Irmãos. Specialties here include fresh fish and delicious seafood stews, supported by a selection of fine wines. The crepe desserts are both a specialty here, and an absolute must.

Bar Caloura

$$ Fodor's Choice

It’s more than worth a trip 20 km (12 miles) east of Ponta Delgada to dine at this popular open-air seafood restaurant with lovely water views; since the place doesn’t take reservations, bring your swimsuit for a dip in the adjacent pool while you wait. The friendly staff will grill up your choice of the fresh local fish on display---perhaps tuna, stingray, or barracuda---but you can’t go wrong with baked mussels in a buttery garlic sauce or just-caught limpet, plus (a rarity for the islands) a well-stocked salad bar.

Bar do Guincho

$$ Fodor's Choice

Raise a glass to life's simple pleasures as you nibble on freshly caught shellfish at this feet-in-the-sand bar and restaurant. There are grilled slabs of meat and fish on the menu, alongside a lengthy cocktail list.

Café Filipe

$$ Fodor's Choice

Set back from a lively town square overlooking the ocean, Café Filipe entices seafood lovers with its glass displays of enormous fish and colorful crustaceans. Take a seat in the bright dining room or out on the terrace to make the best of those sea views.

Cantina Clandestina

$$ Fodor's Choice

A standout on the pedestrianized Rua Amarela strip, Cantina Clandestina serves delicious tapas, light meals, and cocktails (try the Clandestino, which combines gin with lemon, basil, and ginger beer) to a relaxed crowd. You can take a seat in the cozy confines of Cantina Clandestina itself, at sister restaurant-bar Taberna Clandestina across the road, or arrive early to grab one of the much-coveted tables on the famous yellow-painted street itself.

Cantinho do Aziz

$$ | Martim Moniz Fodor's Choice

The interior at one of the best places in Lisbon to try Mozambican cuisine is cozy and welcoming, but, in warm weather, try to sit at one of the tables on the cobblestones outside. The menu features fragrant and spicy dishes like muamba (chicken stew with palm oil) or prawns cooked with okra and coconut milk. There's always at least one vegan dish, and the house-made hot sauce will have you reaching for an ice-cold beer or glass of wine.

In this relaxed fishing village with charcoal grills on every corner, Casa Mateus offers a refreshing reinterpretation of seafood. The Sesimbra favorite is well-known for plating local flavors and traditional dishes with a more refined chef flair. Chaxoila Casa de Pasto

$$ Fodor's Choice

Open since 1947, this restaurant 3 km (2 miles) from the center of Vila Real, on the main road to Chaves, has kept up with the times in terms of decor, presentation, and service. Tasty starters here include bacalhau and chickpea salad, and tripas (tripe) dishes unrivaled by nearby venues. There are a few fish dishes but mains are mostly meat-centric—and often available in half servings—ranging from garlicky alheira sausage served with sautéed grelos (turnip tops) to corn grits with cabbage and grilled ribs, or roasted Maronesa beef flank, as well as recently added spicy dishes from Goa. This is also a good place to sample regional wines and desserts.

Chico Elias

$$ Fodor's Choice

This charmingly rustic restaurant just outside Tomar owes its fame to chef Maria do Céu's creativity—and the huge portions, which are enough for two. Its weekend lunch offer invariably includes delicious hearty dishes such as cabrito assado (roast kid) and cachola (pork rib and loin, served with cabbage). Most of the main dishes take time to prepare in the wood-burning oven, so everyone—even regulars—must phone in advance to put in their order. For dessert, there are fluffy fatias de Tomar and a delicious leite de creme.

A U-shaped dining counter takes center stage at this laid-back restaurant in the heart of Cais do Sodré. The menu offers twists on typical Portuguese dishes—octopus salad comes with dollops of purple potato puree, for instance, and a bacalhau dish sweetened with persimmon—in a relaxed sharable-plates format.

Delfina

$$ | Baixa Fodor's Choice

At the restaurant in the chic AlmaLusa boutique hotel, guests and nonguests can enjoy small plates such as peixinhos da horta (crispy tempura green beans, served with ginger-and-lemon tartare) or mains such as a magnificently creamy house bacalhau (salted codfish). The cut-price à la carte lunch menu draws locals, but dinner is a good value, too. As well as homemade iced tea and juices, there is a representative selection of Portuguese wines; if you're too full for dessert, consider ordering a Moscatel Roxo—a fine sweet tipple from Setúbal, south of the capital.

Essência

$$ | Boavista Fodor's Choice

The cuisine of northern Portugal is notoriously meat-heavy, but local produce is so flavorful that it can easily stand alone. Essência understands this well, and its celebrated vegetarian menu showcases sophisticated meat-free dishes that run the gamut from mushroom carpaccios and colorful garden salads to risottos. Vegan and gluten-free dishes are available, and there are even a handful of seafood and meat options.

Not far from the town's main train station, this restaurant's location on one of Sintra's major thoroughfares means that it is always busy. The dining room is elegantly lighted with crisp linens on the tables, but the favorite seats are on the street. While the à la carte options are reasonably priced, the lunch deal with a drink is the best value during the week.

Lost In

$$ | Príncipe Real Fodor's Choice
A curious Indian-inspired decor welcomes you to this café/bar/restaurant, but your attention immediately goes to the view of Avenida da Liberdade. Despite the decor, the menu lists international dishes.

Marginal

$$ Fodor's Choice

Restaurants serving fresh grilled fish are ten a penny in the center of Peniche. For something deliciously different, head to the northern edge of the peninsula, where the friendly staff at Marginal serve tartares and ceviches, marinated tuna pica pau chunks, sauteed squid, cuttlefish curry, and more in a second-floor dining room with views of the ocean and the Berlengas. Their bestsellers use the fish of the day, but there are also changing daily dishes, often featuring a riot of fresh herbs or even, where it makes sense, fruit. For dessert, the cream cheese and walnut tart is a fine old family recipe.

Memmo Alfama Terrace

$$ | Alfama Fodor's Choice

The terrace at the chic Memmo Alfama Hotel has some of the neighborhood's best views. The menu centers around tapas-style small plates—the selection of Portuguese cheeses and meats, served with a basket of fresh-baked bread, is a good place to start.

Moinho Dom Quixote

$$ Fodor's Choice

In the middle of gorgeous gardens, this unusual restaurant occupies a lovingly restored traditional windmill perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The outdoor seating area has different seating areas tumbling down the cliff and shaded by pines and flowering cacti. The food has Mexican and Middle Eastern accents, with excellent vegetarian options along with the fresh fish synonymous with the Portuguese coast.

Molhó Bico

$$ Fodor's Choice

Hands down, this restaurant in a restored wine cellar near Praça da República serves the best food in Serpa, perhaps in all of Alentejo. Huge wine barrels sit at the entrance to a traditional dining room with domed ceilings, tile floors, and antique farm implements hanging on the walls. In winter, the specialty is grilled pork; in summer, try the gazpacho, followed by the fried fish. The Serpa cheese and the Alentejo wines are good at any time of year. Keep an ear out for some cante alentejano at this restaurant.

Noélia

$$ Fodor's Choice

From the outside, the owner's eponymous restaurant looks like just another unassuming local place, but inside, the flavors sing and the senses are delighted. After all, this is no ordinary restaurant—it's a Michelin Guide–listed one helmed by Noélia, a supremely popular Portuguese chef. Seafood is of course the fixture, but not like you'll have seen it so far. Noélia's inventions are beautiful, outstandingly delicious, and satisfying all at once.
