Fodor's Expert Review Bonjardim

$ Baixa Portuguese

In an alley between Praça dos Restauradores and Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, and known locally as "Rei dos Frangos" (King of Chickens), Bonjardim specializes in superbly cooked spit-roasted chicken, best eaten with fries, a salad, or creamed spinach, and spicy piri-piri. The restaurant and esplanade are crowded at peak times (8–10), but you shouldn't have to wait long, and watching the frenzied waiters is entertaining. An overflow dining room on the opposite side of the alley serves a similar menu but with more grilled meats and is similarly good value (each has a different rest day, so one is always open). They also do takeout.
