THE BEST HOTEL IN COIMBRA AND CENTRAL PORTUGAL

Curia Palace Hotel, Spa, and Golf

$ | Av. Plátanos, Curia, 3780-541, Portugal
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The approach down a tree-lined drive to this magnificent four-story Art Nouveau hotel is like the beginning of an old movie; in fact, parts of The Buster Keaton Story were filmed here. The centerpiece of 15 acres of gardens, vineyards, and orchards all supply the kitchen. The marble-floored reception area transports you to the 1920s; corridors with names such as Avenue of the Roses lead to large guest rooms. Relaxing in the indoor pool, wandering in the aviary or the park, taking the children to the petting farm, and dining on outstanding Portuguese fare at Belle Époque, are just some of the activities here.

Pros

  • Lots of activities geared toward families
  • 5 acres of gardens, vineyards, and orchards
  • Palatial surroundings

Cons

  • Standard rooms on the small side
  • Not a wide range of spa treatments
  • Needs some updates

THE BEST HOTEL IN COIMBRA AND CENTRAL PORTUGAL

Palace Hotel do Bussaco

$$ | Mata do Bussaco, Luso, 3050-261, Portugal
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Designed as a royal hunting lodge and set in a 250-acre forest, this bizarrely ornate hotel is an architectural hodgepodge with elements that run the gamut from neo-Gothic to early Walt Disney. There's an elevator, but who can resist walking up the grand, red-carpeted stairway, its walls lined with azulejo panels, and past the suit of armor? Guest rooms are large, high-ceilinged, and luxuriously furnished with antiques. It's worth the steep price at the Mesa Real ("Royal Table") restaurant just to sit at a finely laid table and take in the carved-wood ceiling, inlaid hardwood floors, and Manueline windows. An elegantly prepared leitão (suckling pig) perfectly complements the renowned Buçaco wines stored in the hotel's immense cellars.

Pros

  • A fairy-tale castle down to the smallest of details
  • Dining room aglow from stained-glass windows
  • Beautiful hiking paths

Cons

  • Some rooms have over-the-top decor
  • Often booked by tour groups
  • Some areas look tired

MS Collection Arouca – Mosteiro da Arouca

$$$ | Largo Santa Mafalda, 4540-101, Portugal Fodor's Choice

This five-star property from Portuguese brand MS Collection occupies the restored south wing of the Arouca Monastery, a vast 10th-century complex that still houses a museum and church. Landscaped gardens feature a large pool, original water features, and trails spanning out to surrounding hillsides. There’s also a serene spa, elegant restaurant, and cocktail bar, making it the region’s first true luxury stay.

Quinta das Lágrimas

$$ | Rua António Augusto Gonçalves, Coimbra, 3040-901, Portugal Fodor's Choice

The gardens of this palatial building are part of Portuguese history: it was here where Pedro, son of King Afonso IV, and Inês de Castro, lady in waiting to the royal court, met secretly and fell deeply in love. It was a tragic tale, and they say the garden's ancient fountain runs with her tears. The palace is now a grande dame hotel with a plush velvet reception area, a library and other richly furnished common rooms, and even a small chapel. There's a Turkish bath and sauna, large outdoor and indoor swimming pools, and---rarest of amenities for a city hotel---a golf course. The hotel restaurant, Arcadas, has lovely views over the gardens, and both dinner and lavish breakfasts can be enjoyed al-fresco when weather permits.

Pros

  • Huge gardens with trails for exploring
  • Extremely attentive service
  • Pools, small spa, and golf course on-site

$$ | Rua Couraça dos Apóstolo 15–17, Coimbra, 3000-432, Portugal

Set in the old town, this hotel feels right at home with the city's historic buildings and is a short walk to most of the city's attractions. Split between several buildings in the immediate area, the rooms are individually decorated, with a "more is more" approach that embraces rich velvets, ornate light fixtures, and abundant use of golden tones against exposed stone walls. Syntony Hotels – Paradinha Village

$$ | Aldeia de Paradinha, Portugal

Syntony Hotels Paradinha offers 11 contemporary cabins and apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Paiva River. Located in Paradinha village—one of the certified "Aldeias de Portugal" (Villages of Portugal), a network preserving authentic rural communities—the modern retreat contrasts with the traditional schist and slate houses of this tiny mountainside settlement. The buildings range from studios to 2-bedroom stone-and-glass houses, offering nature immersion without sacrificing comfort: each unit has a fully equipped kitchen, firewood for heating, and yoga mats. While most guests come to disconnect, limited Wi-Fi compensates for poor mobile coverage in this remote location. Shared facilities include bicycles for exploring, a barbecue area, and an infinity pool that appears to merge with the river below.

Pros

  • Comfortable and stylish stays in nature
  • Tranquil setting
  • Bikes provided for exploring

Cons

  • A little at odds with traditional houses
  • Very remote
  • Area very hot in summer and wet in winter
