The polar bear warning signs on the edges of town aren’t just popular props for selfies. Polar bears pose a very real danger, occasionally foraging for food along the shore or even in Longyearbyen. Never leave Longyearbyen without a knowledgeable guide, no matter what time of year you’re visiting. Longyearbyen is otherwise a very safe place.
