Most shops in Malta are open from 9 to 7, except in commercial areas where they stay open until 10 pm. Generally stores are closed on Sunday and public holidays. Malta has several crafts that make excellent souvenirs. Blown glass is a modern phenomenon, but is now a signature gift of the island. More traditional are bizzilla (hand-woven lace), silver filigree, globigerina limestone, and coralline limestone. Valletta's main shopping street, Triq Repubblika, is lined with touristy shops—pick up postcards and film here, and then venture onto side streets for a look at everyday Maltese wares. At the open-air market (Triq Mercante), with some haggling you may snap up a good bargain.
This tiny family-run shop is more than 100 years old and sells a range of quality Maltese crafts including silver and gold filigree jewelry, blown glass, Gozitan lace, and limestone carvings.
The open-air Sunday market has been moved from Merchants Street to Floriana due to ongoing works at the Gate. With some haggling you may snap up a good bargain.
