Beet/Seed

$$

This vegan restaurant-café has two levels. Downstairs, the café (Seed) is more of a juice and cocktail bar; above, Beet conjures an upmarket fast-food vibe, dishing up plant-based burgers and soups. The former typically come slathered in a melted vegan cheese that does a decent impersonation of the real thing. A crowd-pleasing blend of falafel, fries, and the lesser-seen picon beer, a pint-size French apéritif made with orange bitters, make this a treat, even if the staff are a little high-handed.

Pl. Guillaume II 26, Luxembourg City, 1648, Luxembourg
26-201--375
Known For
  • Lip-smacking vegan treats that don’t skimp on the calories
  • Service is quick (if haughty)
  • It’s great value for the city center

Café Du Pont

$$

The service might be among the more lethargic in town, but where this café-restaurant truly shines is its setting: perched directly above the waters of the River Our. The menu is pretty standard stuff, with an array of schnitzels catching the eye. Or just come for a coffee and soak in the views.

Grand Rue 1, Vianden, 9410, Luxembourg
83-4061
Known For
  • A sumptuous setting over the water's edge
  • The weekly menus are decent value
  • A good spot to rest up for a walk

Caves du Sud

$

On the road from Schengen to Remerschen, the stone exterior of the Caves du Sud belies the architecturally clever wooden boat in the interior. (The boat itself pays homage to the Romans who sailed the Moselle during harvest time two millennia ago.) Just about every Vinsmoselle wine, liquor, and crémant is available in this shop, and a friendly staff can help find what you're looking for. An adjoining dining room is a perfect place to match Luxembourg's wines with French food for lunch or dinner. Call for dinner reservations.

Châlet am Brill

$

While at the Parc Brill, stop by the Châlet am Brill for a cold drink or a light snack. There's a kids' menu, too.

Marie-Adelaide Avenue, Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg

Flux

$

Hear us out. The location isn't all that promising (next to a petrol station), but this takeaway burger joint is popular for good reason: it's good. When you can grab petrol and an Aberdeen angus, rosti, and raclette-cheeseburger at the same time, who needs to dine in. The enthusiasm of visiting touring motorcyclists might have boosted its profile, but this is a true guilty pleasure just a few miles south of town, and there isn't much else in the area.

Bousserstrooss 5, Esch-sur-Sûre, 9144, Luxembourg
26-889--543
Known For
  • It's one for the road
  • The chili-cheese fries are a decadence to savor
  • The burgers are just huge

Konrad

$$

A slightly eccentric café bar set in a vaulted cellar. There are homemade cakes, organic snacks, decent coffee, and not a single piece of matching furniture. Live music is often held here in the evenings; it's something of an expat institution.

Rue du Nord 7, 2229, Luxembourg
26-201--894
Known For
  • The cakes are pretty good
  • It's a charming little spot to rest your feet
  • Hang around for the live music and shows

Mise en scène

$$

A pleasant spot for lunch or a quick meal, just next to the theater. It claims to specialize in pizza but, in truth, it does a little bit of everything, usually to a good standard. Large salads, pastas, grilled fish and meat, and even the usual Luxembourgish classics, including kuddelfleck (tripe), judd mat Gardebonnen (smoked pork and broad bean stew), and bouchée à la reine (vol-au-vent and creamy chicken) decorate a menu not short on ideas.

Rue du Brill 60, Esch-sur-Alzette, 4042, Luxembourg
26-532--189
Known For
  • Lunchtime set meals are good value
  • A nice spot to try some Luxembourgish food
  • Quick service

Oberweis

$$

Arguably Luxembourg's most famous patisserie-café is also the inventor of the "bamkuch," a strange, ribbed pipe of biscuity almond sponge covered in icing. Light lunches are available, with the likes of quiche Lorraine and spinach pie on offer, and there's a quiet terrace on the street. Other outlets include a branch inside the main railway station.

Grand Rue 16, Luxembourg City, 1660, Luxembourg
47-0703
Known For
  • The pastries make for a good post-breakfast pick-me-up
  • Their hot chocolate is a must in winter
  • Superb cakes and chocolates to try

Pâtisserie Hoffmann Grevenmacher

$$$$

Stop in the Schumacher Patisserie for a sweet treat or a light lunch. Everyone in town comes here at some point during the day.

Um Plateau

$$$

A number of eateries here skewer that middle ground between bar and restaurant; this does it better than most. Chic, cozy, and with one of the more packed terraces in the city, Um Plateau sits aside from the rest of the Grund. The à la carte menu may slip all too snugly into standard brasserie fare, but the reason it’s the hosting spot du jour for locals is the tapas-like small dishes (think: wagyu sliders, shrimp popcorn, and foie gras). That the kitchen serves until the small hours only solidifies its standing on the cool late-night dining circuit.

Plateau Altmunster 6, Luxembourg City, 1123, Luxembourg
22-3692
Known For
  • Fun terrace
  • Good small plates
  • Open late

Closed Sun.
