Quin Village has retained the essence of old Ireland despite the fact that it is only a 20-minute drive from Shannon Airport and less than 6½ km (4 miles) from iconic Dromoland Castle. "Blow-ins" have infiltrated village life with the development of smaller units in the village center, but little else has changed in Quin over the last century. Dominated by its 14th-century Franciscan abbey, its line of vernacular low-rise buildings is broken only by a narrow bridge over the Rine River. A plaque plays tribute to the village’s only celebrity, Paddy Hannan. He was accredited with Australia’s Kalgoorlie gold rush and subsequent prosperity of the area, where he lends his name to a main street.
