Quin Village has retained the essence of old Ireland despite the fact that it is only a 20-minute drive from Shannon Airport and less than 6½ km (4 miles) from iconic Dromoland Castle. "Blow ins" have infiltrated village life with the development of smaller units in the village center, but little else has changed in Quin over the last century. Dominated by its 14th-century Franciscan abbey, its line of vernacular low-rise buildings is broken only by a narrow bridge over the Rine River. A plaque plays tribute to the village’s only celebrity, Paddy Hannan. He was accredited with Australia’s Kalgoorlie gold rush and subsequent prosperity of the area, where he lends his name to a main street.
