FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This family-run resort hotel northwest of Berchtesgadenand southwest of Salzburg—really is the ultimate Alpine hideaway, a refuge of relaxation surrounded by lush green meadows and craggy mountain peaks. For unwinding, the highlight here is the award-winning Artemacur Spa, which includes a large indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool, a fitness and yoga studio, several treatment rooms, and a selection of saunas. There's also a connected health center offering holistic wellbeing programs, run by the resort's co-owner Dr. Andreas Färber. All hotel stays are half-board, which means an exceptional breakfast buffet and a four-course gourmet dinner are included as standard; those who stay in the hotel during the day can also enjoy a light lunch buffet and selection of afternoon cakes. The most luxurious rooms and suites, including the unique, two-level spa loft with whirlpool bath and private sauna, can be found in the newer part of the hotel complexbut save time for a stroll around the original, 500-year-old Augustinian monastery that forms the heart of Klosterhof. You can also book a private dining experience in the Klosterhof-Stuben to really soak up the local history.

Pros

  • Extensive spa includes heated pool with Alpine views
  • Apple-wood furnishings and artworks galore
  • Superb breakfast buffet, lunch, and dinner included in rates

Cons

  • Gourmet dinners are not quite fine dining
  • Naked sauna users visible from rooms and corridors
  • True seclusion requires a 25-minute drive from Berchtesgaden

Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden

$$$$ | Hintereck 1, Berchtesgaden, 83471, Germany Fodor's Choice

It's hard to imagine a more majestic hotel location than this one, high in the hills outside Berchtesgaden, surrounded by quiet woods and with sweeping mountain panoramas. The hotel itself is dripping with five-star luxury, yet retains a quiet, relaxed feel. Amenities range from four restaurants (including the two-Michelin-starred PUR and fondue-specialist Bergstüberl) to an extensive luxury spa, to childcare in a devoted play area. Despite its size, the hotel blends well into the countryside and affords a feeling of isolation from which you can enjoy the stunning landscape around.

Berghotel Rehlegg

$$$$ | Holzeng. 16, Ramsau, 83486, Germany

A 10-minute drive west of Berchtesgaden, on the way to the Watzmann (the region's highest mountain), this upmarket Alpine retreat has a spa and pool and includes meals in the rates. There's a special focus on sustainability—the owners have used the surrounding area to enhance its minimal interior design, and they work with local farmers to ensure regional and local cuisine with zero waste is served as part of the meal plan—as well as on "switching off", with rooms free of tablets and TVs (unless specifically requested), Wi-Fi turned off at night, and telescopes for counting the stars. It's ideally located for a number of trailheads, making it an ideal overnight stay for hikers. Many of cozy rooms have private balconies, while the large senior suites include open fireplaces. All bookings are "half-board plus," which means the extensive breakfast and evening buffets are supplemented by light lunches and afternoon cakes.

Pros

  • Quiet location with views of the Watzmann
  • Great swimming and spa area
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Mazelike layout
  • A little way outside of town
  • Restaurant can get busy
