$$$$ | Rue du Barri, Èze, 06360, France Fodor's Choice

Bordered by gardens that hang from the mountainside in nearly Babylonian style, this hotel encompasses an entire stretch of the village, streets and all, and, in addition to divine accommodations, it delivers breathtaking Mediterranean views—at a price. The fanciest guest rooms feature peasant-luxe fireplaces, faux 15th-century panel paintings, and chandeliered rock-grotto bathrooms; nearly all rooms, though, have exposed stone and beams, and even the cheapest have views over Èze's charming tile roofs (but you'll kick yourself if you don't pay the extra for the terrace and sea views).

Pros

  • Insane views
  • Fabulous heated infinity pool
  • Two-Michelin-starred restaurant plus three other dining choices

Cons

  • No elevator
  • Cobbled walk to reach hotel

Domaine du Mas Pierre

$$$$ | 2320 rte. des Serres, St-Paul-de-Vence, 06570, France Fodor's Choice

If the Garden of Eden offered a five-star spa retreat, this Relais & Châteaux property—where rooms in elegant bastides (country houses) have their own outdoor spaces amid sculpture-dotted, aromatic gardens—would be it. In addition to a dozen treatment rooms, the expansive spa has a hammam, saunas, a snow cave, a heated pool, and a fitness studio with coach-led classes. Around every corner there's a new discovery, from a sand-bottomed beach club lagoon with a slide and waterfall to an adults-only villa with a private pool. Families are warmly welcomed with an Alice in Wonderland–themed play park and a kids’ club that operates daily during school holidays. Dogs are welcome, too. Hôtel du Cap–Eden Roc

$$$$ | Bd. J.F. Kennedy, Antibes, 06160, France Fodor's Choice

Open since 1870, this extravagantly expensive hotel reminiscent of The Great Gatsby era is still the mainstay for A-Listers and those with deep pockets for good reason—with 22 acres of immaculate gardens bordered by rocky shore, it embodies the fantasy of a subtropical French Riviera idyll. The Villa Soleil joined forces with the neighboring Eden Roc tearoom in 1914 and expanded its luxuries to include a swimming pool blasted into seaside bedrock. After the Great War, two stylish American intellectuals—Sara and Gerald Murphy—rented the entire complex and invited all their friends, a stellar lot ranging from the Windsors to Rudolph Valentino and Marlene Dietrich. Their most frequent guests were Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, who used it as the model for Hôtel des Etrangers in his Tender Is the Night. Large, sun-drenched rooms are thickly carpeted and furnished with antiques in the main Second Empire mansion; the waterside Pavillon Eden Roc wing is more modern and has sheer-horizon views. Everyone dresses formally for dinner in the Eden-Roc restaurant, the Champagne Lounge, and historical La Rotonde piano bar. To celebrate its 150-year-anniversary, the hotel opened the private Villa Sainte-Anne, which has its own infinity pool. In 2023, 46 suites were reimagined; the Dior spa was launched; and Michelin-star restaurant chef Sébastien Broda shared the limelight with 33-year-old Gabriel Le Quang, the hotel's pastry sous-chef, who won the 2023 title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France Pâtissier-Confiseur, making him one of France's best pastry chefs.

Pros

  • Hands down one of the world's best hotels, booked well in advance
  • Buffet breakfast included
  • Fascinating glimpse into 20th-century history

Cons

  • If you're not a celebrity, tip big to keep the staff interested
  • Insanely expensive everything
  • Formal dress required for dinner in restaurant and bars

Les Belles Rives

$$$$ | 33 bd. Édouard Baudoin, Juan-les-Pins, 06160, France Fodor's Choice

Lovingly restored to 1930s glamour, this fabled landmark proves that what's old is new again, as France's stylish young set make this endearingly neoclassique place with lovely Art Deco accommodations one of their latest favorites. Not far from the onetime villa of Gerald and Sara Murphy—those Roaring '20s millionaires who devoted their lives to proving the maxim "living well is the best revenge"—the Belles Rives became the home-away-from-home for literary giant F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda (chums of the Murphys). Dining on the terrace of the on-site Michelin-starred restaurant on a fine summer night, with the sea lapping below and stars twinkling in the velvety Mediterranean sky, you'll share that "living well" feeling. There's no pool, but the private beach (très cher, as is the €39 burger) is just steps away.

Pros

  • Spectacular vistas, especially from rooms with a frontal (not lateral) sea view
  • Lots of water sports
  • Michelin-starred restaurant with vegetarian set menu

Cons

  • Everything at beach costs extra (loungers, towels, umbrellas)
  • Careful when ordering fish by the gram (it's pricey)
  • Thin walls

Designer Charles Zana ties it all together indoors with light hues, natural stone, wrought iron, and wood. The rate includes breakfast; just be sure to save lots of room for a meal at Beefbar, the on-site grilled-meats and street-food concept restaurant.

The Maybourne Riviera

$$$$ | 1551 rte. de la Turbie, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, 06190, France Fodor's Choice

A gravity defying marvel, perched so high above the Mediterranean that it feels as if it floats between sea and sky, this property designed by renowned French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte is a dream come true for design and art enthusiasts. From every angle, the views of Monaco, France, and Italy are nothing short of hypnotic, and floor-to-ceiling glass invites that fabled Côte D’Azur light to flood in. All rooms have terraces with sweeping sea views; three rooms also have private pools. But the showstopper here is the infinity pool, suspended over the Mediterranean, merging with the endless blues of the horizon. Gastronomy is led by chef Sébastien Tantot, and each of the four restaurants offers a distinct dining experience. Mixologist cocktail creations can be enjoyed in the bar or terrace overlooking Monte Carlo.  The Surrenne Spa promises rejuvenation for body and soul. Maybourne La Plage, a beach club and restaurant (though there is no actual beach, rather a sun bed deck with access to sea swimming in crystalline waters) is a 10-minute ride away in Cap Martin.

  • Spectacular views from every room

Cons

  • Cliffside location means you'll need vehicle for access and sightseeing

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez

$$$$ | Plage de la Bouillabaisse, St-Tropez, 83990, France

Perhaps the most opulent of St-Tropez's luxe hangouts—with its balustraded white villa built in 1936—is now an LVMH property, where French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte refreshed the interiors, with the predominant theme being light. The spa (featuring hammam, snow shower, and ice fountain experiences) transforms you with Guerlain facial or body treatments, pedicures, manicures, and hair or beauty makeovers, leaving you ready to linger over dinner at chef Arnaud Donckele’s three-Michelin-star restaurant, Vague d'Or (set menus from €415). You're already dropping some serious cash here, so it's worth paying extra for a seaside room where you can lean over the balcony and take in the coastal views.

Pros

  • Only St-Tropez hotel with a private waterfront
  • Three-Michelin-star restaurant
  • Children welcome

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • For the price, some rooms are small

Hotel Boscolo Nice

$$$$ | 12 bd. Victor Hugo, Nice, 06000, France

The lobby of this Belle Époque extravaganza feels otherworldly (think the white-on-white, Rococo-ed rooms at the end of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey), and the white-and-cream guest rooms have things like cascading, diamondlike ceiling lights, sculpted rose door handles, and the very latest in push-button luxury. The hotel's Italian restaurant can be hit and miss, but it has a great terrace, and the basement contains one of the most striking spas around (there are even plasma TVs in the saunas, though you don't get to pick the channel).

Pros

  • Near shops and restaurants
  • Striking spa
  • Five blocks from the beach, but who cares when you have the rooftop Bclub?

Cons

  • Service can be hit and miss

Hôtel Negresco

$$$$ | 37 promenade des Anglais, Nice, 06000, France

This white-stucco slice of classic Riviera extravagance accommodates well-heeled guests in elegant, uniquely decorated rooms replete with swagged drapes, fine antiques, and a few quirky touches (like plastic-glitter bathtubs). Built by Henri Negresco and opened in 1912, the landmark still epitomizes La Belle Époque, thanks to its marble columns, gilded ceilings, and qualité du Louvre collection of Old Master art. Its awe-inspiring glass ceiling has even been listed as a historic monument. Chef Virginie Basselot has added some modern touches to the menu at the Michelin-starred Le Chantecler. For less fuss (though still expensive), try the carousel-adorned La Rotonde brasserie. For a taste of the Old Riviera, retreat to the vintage walnut-and-velour bar (the best on the coast) for the cocktail of the month. Indulge for at least one day at the hotel's private beach (loungers €45 for front row) or at the state-of-the-art N Le Spa.

Pros

  • Best bar on the Riviera
  • Spa and private beach

Enjoy a drink at the patio bar or a dip in the cliff-side pool. The excellent restaurant serves meals year-round in a candlelit garden.

Le Byblos

$$$$ | Av. Paul-Signac, St-Tropez, 83990, France

Forget five stars—this toy Mediterranean village, which is grouped around courtyards landscaped with palms, olive trees, and lavender, has a "palace" classification, not to mention access to the exclusive Byblos Beach Ramatuelle. Guest rooms, done à la provençale, have ultramodern comforts. Lounge by the pool, and enjoy Italian fare at the on-site Il Giardino or Japanese cuisine in Zuma. Speaking of food, the kitchens here get produce from le jardin de la Piboule, an agroecological garden with 70 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and aromatic flowers. Lounge by the pool, and enjoy the view with an aperitif from the Sky Bar rooftop. As evening falls, anyone who is anyone goes to the hotel's Caves du Roy—a kitsch disco extravaganza where "squillionaires" order €25,000 bottles of Champagne. It's paparazzi-free and virtually impossible to get in unless you arrive early or reserve a table in advance.

Pros

  • Excellent and varied dining and drinking options
  • The spa by Sisley has Thai massages and sound-bath experiences
  • Beach access with seaside restaurant

Cons

  • Some rooms can be noisy in summer
  • It may be hard to get beach loungers
  • Strict door policy at Les Caves du Roy nightclub
