Fodor's Expert Review Musée Borély

Marseille Museum/Gallery

After a top-to-bottom renovation for European Capital of Culture 2013, the gracious 18th-century Château Borély became home to the collections of three major museums: Musée des Arts Décoratif (Museum of Decorative Arts), Musée de la Mode (Fashion Museum), and the Musée de la Faïence (Museum of Faïence Ceramics). The bright exhibition rooms feature brilliant lacquered ceilings and installations by French artists and designers, all the better to show off a gorgeous collection of Marseille faïence pottery dating to the early 17th century, tapestries, 18th-century hand-painted murals, furniture, and fashions from the 15th to 21st century. The château's large park and café lend themselves to a pleasant afternoon in this lovely part of the city.
