Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club

$$$ | Off Colesmans Hatch Rd., RH18 5JR, England Fodor's Choice

Convenient for exploring nearby Standen House, this luxurious country hotel offers traditionally furnished bedrooms, superb gourmet dining, and fun and games galore—from golfing on the scenic 18-hole forest course to spa treatments in the country club (as well as tennis, swimming, croquet, snooker, and bike hire). Built in the 19th century, the hotel's enviable location on the edge of Ashdown Forest, which was the setting for A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh stories, means there are appealing walking paths all around; a half-day circular walk takes in the original Poohsticks Bridge. Even if you can't stay overnight, come here for a round of golf, a relaxing spa day, or afternoon tea on the lawn. And, if you can, stick around for dinner, as the hotel's Anderida Restaurant is one of the region's best. Ashdown Park is 6 miles southeast of East Grinstead.

Pros

  • Heritage property amid stunning nature (with literary connections to Winnie the Pooh)
  • Superb restaurant with fantastic service
  • Gym and pool access included

Cons

  • Traditional furnishings feel a bit dated in places
  • Basic TVs in rooms
  • Wi-Fi can drop in and out

Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa

$$$$ | Christchurch Rd., New Milton, BH25 6QS, England Fodor's Choice

This grand early-19th-century country-house hotel and spa on 130 acres of manicured grounds ranks among Britain's most acclaimed—and most expensive—lodgings. All rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated using rich fabrics; many have a balcony or terrace, and all ooze luxury. Romantics might want to try one of the 12 secluded "treehouse" suites in the woods. The lavish spa is particularly strong on facials and has a large and elegant pool. The restaurant, the Dining Room at Chewton Glen, concentrates on grilled meats and more plant-based or Asian-influenced dishes, with a choice of more than 700 wines (there's also a less formal gastropub and pool bar). Besides golf and tennis (on indoor or outdoor courts), family-friendly leisure activities such as archery, falconry, pony grooming, and walking with miniature sheep are available, along with guided bike rides in the forest or kayaking. There's also a self-contained cooking school and a tree house kids' club. A 20-minute walk through the grounds takes you down to the coast. Chewton Glen is 12 miles southwest of Lyndhurst on the A35.

Pros

  • Classic English luxury
  • Top-notch leisure facilities
  • High staff-to-guest ratio

Cons

  • Expensive rates
  • Some hotel decor tired
  • Food quality variable

Ramside Hall

$$$ | Off A690, Durham, DH1 1TD, England Fodor's Choice

Just a short drive or taxi ride from the center of town yet surrounded by a sea of green, Ramside Hall is one of the most luxurious stays in the Northeast. The main hotel has some good rooms and wonderful suites, but the treehouses are even better—they're built on stilts and set in woodland overlooking the two 18-hole championship golf courses surrounding the hotel. Each of the one-, two-, and three-bedroom treehouses offers a spacious living room with a gas fireplace and enormous TV, a well-equipped kitchenette, a modern bathroom with a free-standing copper bath, and a spacious terrace with a hot tub and steam room. Shuttle buses take you from the treehouses to the main hotel complex, where there are two excellent dining options (try the pan-Asian restaurant Fusion) and an ultra-modern spa with pools galore.

Pros

  • Luxury tree houses set among 350 acres are one option here
  • Delicious bone marrow fries in the Rib Room
  • Two golf courses and modern spa with multiple pools

Cons

  • Expensive option for the region
  • Short drive (or long walk) to the city center
  • Events in main hotel can get noisy

Macdonald Linden Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

$$$ | Off A697, Longhorsley, NE65 8XF, England

Built as a getaway for a wealthy banker in 1812, this charming country estate surrounded by 450 acres of private grounds is wonderfully secluded; it's a full five minutes' drive off the nearest public road. The original building is well maintained, particularly the beautiful, spacious atrium and a wood-paneled bar. A modern wing has less character, and the guest rooms could do with a face-lift, but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms modern. The Dobson Restaurant serves good Modern British cuisine, and the family-friendly Linden Tree pub is an option if you want something more relaxed. Part of the vast estate has been converted into an 18-hole golf course, which makes it a popular destination for sports enthusiasts. A spa and indoor swimming pool are on-site. The hotel is located just off the A1, roughly halfway between Morpeth and Alnwick.

Pros

  • Out-of-the-way escape
  • Soothing spa
  • Gorgeous original building

Cons

  • Can get overrun by large tour groups
  • Visiting spa means a trip outside
  • Bedrooms not as well maintained as public areas
