9 Best Hotels in Prague, Czech Republic

Background Illustration for Hotels

Prague is chock-full of charming places to stay. From beautifully restored monasteries to a capsule room at the top of the communist-era television tower, there’s a remarkably wide range of choice for all budgets. Increased competition among hoteliers means that staff are almost invariably charming and knowledgeable, and speak excellent English.

The best areas to stay are the Old Town (Staré M?sto), the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana), the Castle Area (Hrad?any), and the New Town (Nové M?sto). The center of Prague is reasonably small, so staying outside of the center doesn't mean a massive slog to the castle. Neighborhoods like Smíchov, Žižkov, and Vinohrady are easily accessible by Prague’s inexpensive, highly efficient metro and tram system.

Recent years have seen a drop in prices, even during high season (May–September). In winter rates can fall by a third or even half. The majority of hotels accept online bookings, so the best deals are found by searching a few months in advance of a trip and snapping up deals as soon as they're offered. It's best to book directly with the property.

Most hotels now offer free Wi-Fi and air-conditioning, and many of the high-end spots also offer extras, like complimentary afternoon tea, welcome drinks, or free airport transfers.

Mama Shelter Prague

$ | Veletržní 1502/20, Prague, 170 00, Czech Republic Fodor's Choice

Stand up and take a bow, Mama Shelter: finally, this hip district has the hip lodging it deserves, in this revitalized communist-era tower block right by the National Gallery. And it isn't style over substance: a hearty breakfast, comfortable, large rooms with design touches, an almost maternal welcome (they take the name seriously), and a huge bar and terrace combine to make this one of the best places to stay not just in Holešovice but in the whole city.

Pros

  • Cool rooms with large windows and fun design touches, like Looney Tunes lamps
  • Huge bar and terrace to see and be seen
  • Reasonable prices

Cons

  • No gym
  • Breakfast can get packed
  • Not central to main attractions

Absolutum Boutique Hotel

$ | Jablonského 4, Prague, 170 00, Czech Republic

This modern hotel in a somewhat industrial part of town doesn't exactly live up to its "boutique" name, but it's not a bad option nevertheless. Extras include a wellness center with a Finnish sauna, a decent restaurant, and well-designed, spacious rooms and bathrooms for an affordable price.

Pros

  • Some luxurious touches such as marble bathrooms and in-floor heating
  • Clean and comfortable
  • Very close to Nádraží Holešovice for getting around the city

Cons

  • Breakfast could be better
  • Uninspiring exterior
  • Little to do in the immediate surroundings

Art Hotel

$ | Nad Královskou oborou 53, Prague, 170 00, Czech Republic

This family-run little hotel has art on the walls by the grandfather and great-grandfather of the owner, as well as other Czech artists, and is otherwise clean, comfortable, and modern. There's a garden, and the rooms have been spruced up recently and are now quite stylish for this price point. Staff lend blankets for guests who want to go picnicking in the nearby parks. One of the suites has a terrace with a hammock.

Pros

  • Mostly quiet, leafy neighborhood
  • Reasonably priced
  • Hotel garden

Cons

  • By Sparta Praha FC stadium so there can be crowds after games
  • Showers weirdly low
  • Elevator small and some stairs still necessary to reach certain rooms

Hotel Anna

$ | Budečská 17, 120 00, Czech Republic

The bright neoclassical façade and art nouveau details have been lovingly restored on this 19th-century building on a quiet residential street. It's significantly cheaper than most city-center hotels and just a short tram or Metro ride away.

  • Helpful English-speaking staff
  • Affordable for city center

Hotel Belvedere

$ | Milady Horákové 19, Prague, 170 00, Czech Republic

Located in one of the early-20th-century constructivist-style buildings dotted around this district, the Hotel Belvedere is an unremarkable but reliable hotel with good prices and a prime location, in the middle of Letná and Holešovice (the districts kind of blend into one around here). It's a good option for those who care more about staying in a real part of the city than about historic charm, but it's still well connected and the surrounding area is great for foodies, sports fans, and art lovers.

Pros

  • Surrounded by hip cafés and restaurants
  • Decent hotel restaurant and breakfast
  • Still only 20 minutes' walk from Old Town Square

Cons

  • Away from the main sights
  • Some street noise
  • A little dated

Hotel Élite Prague

$ | Ostrovní 32, Prague, 110 00, Czech Republic

A 14th-century Gothic façade and many poetic architectural details have been preserved in this affordable hotel, thanks to an extensive renovation. • Historic feel with modern comforts
  • Close to the National Theater

Hotel Salvator

$ | Truhlářská 10, Prague, 110 00, Czech Republic

This efficiently run establishment just outside Staré Mĕsto offers more comforts than most in its class, as well as a pretty setting arranged around a central courtyard and plant-filled balconies. Couple that with a prime location and reasonable prices, and overall it's a good value. Rooms face either the street or the small courtyard and restaurant, which means it can get a bit loud sometimes.

Pros

  • Lovely Spanish-themed restaurant and courtyard
  • In-house tourist office
  • Good value

Cons

  • Courtyard-facing rooms can be noisy at mealtimes
  • Bland room decor
  • Not all rooms have a/c

Ibis Praha Old Town Hotel

$ | Na Poříčí 5, Prague, 110 00, Czech Republic

Reliable quality and low prices, and a location pretty much across the street from the Municipal House, win the day for this chain hotel. There's some attempt to brighten things up in the public spaces, but the modern rooms are not much to write home about, and lack views. However, this is among the cheapest options in the city center that meets international standards.

Pros

  • Within easy walking distance of Old Town Square
  • Good value for money
  • Reliable

Cons

  • Expensive buffet breakfast
  • Rooms are small and can be dark
  • No restaurant

Sax Vintage Design Hotel

$ | Jánský vršek 3, Prague, 118 00, Czech Republic

This bold, bright, and affordable hotel was favored by former secretary of state Madeleine Albright (there's a framed letter of thanks on the wall). It's an imaginative blast of fresh air amid the cookie-cutter style of some international hotels. The interior design is an explosion, and celebration, of all things excellent during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s—and everything, from the lamps to the barstools, is original. Rooms keep the cheerfully retro vibes going.

Pros

  • Daily happy hour with free wine, beer, and homemade pastries
  • Located on a quiet street
  • Unique and lively decor

Cons

  • Design might be too much for those with more conservative tastes
  • Not convenient to Prague nightlife
  • Some noise in rooms near communal areas
