Walk through an 800-year-old wall to find a secret swimming spot across the sea from a cursed island. Sounds like a fairy tale, but in Dubrovnik such places actually exist, and there are two of them. One of the Buža (hole-in-the-wall) bars is marked by a wooden sign pointing toward "cold drinks." The other has no signage at all; you just walk through a doorway in the city walls. With tables arranged on a series of terraces built into the rocks and jazzy soundtracks to go along with stunning vistas, both bars make a great place to stop for a drink or a swim; you can jump right off the rocks in front of the bar into the sea.

When the Hotel More was being built, a piece of machinery fell through the ground; it was only then that an 8,000-year-old cave was discovered underneath. It has been carefully converted into a three-story bar, with twinkling lights and stalactites, making it a great place for a light bite during the day and an unforgettable setting for a cocktail by night. Outside, their seaside terrace is a fabulous place to lounge with a coffee or cocktail and have a swim.

Surely one of the most unique places in the world to party, Culture Club Revelin is the best nightclub in Dubrovnik, with big-name DJs and theme nights throughout the summer. Find it located in the 500-year-old Revelin Fort, part of the Old Town's fortification system, near the Ploče Gate. Admission is often free before midnight; look for staff handing out flyers around town.

Surely among the world's most impressive venues, Cocktail Bar Massimo is located inside one of the turrets of the fortified town walls and offers wonderful sunset views over the peninsula. Drinks are raised up the turret on a pulley, and you have to climb a steep ladder to get to the top (fair warning to anyone wearing a dress).

Dubrovnik's only craft brewery (and one of only a handful in Croatia), Dubrovnik Beer Company produces four main beers: an IPA, a milk stout, a lager, and a pale ale. Located in a former salt storage building in Gruž, it's a popular hangout for both locals and tourists, with regular concerts, pub quizzes, and other events taking place. Hour-long brewery tours, which include samples and snacks, are offered daily.

Labarint opened in 2003 and is still attracting a moneyed, fortysomething clientele. The club combines a late-night terrace bar with live music and views over the old harbor, a black-and-red nightclub with live cabaret and jazz, and a smart restaurant in a cozy, ancient-walled dining space.

Everyone has spent at least one great night watching live jazz under the stars at this Dubrovnik institution. Well-worn antiques and memorabilia fill the cozy, candlelit interior, while in summer, tables spill onto the piazza. It's not cheap, but it's a cool way to finish a night.
