Mondschein

$$ | Mariahilfstrasse 6, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

Among the city's oldest and pinkest houses, this warm and welcoming family-run hotel was built across the river from the Old Town in 1473. River-facing rooms are few and should be reserved in advance; the ones at the rear can be a little gloomy and some are on the small side, although bathrooms are often disproportionately spacious. All are nicely furnished, with bathrooms attractively finished in blue marble and Swarovski crystal decorations.

NALA individuellhotel

$$ | Müllerstrasse 15, A-6020, Austria

Quirky, colorful, and unapologetically contemporary, NALA is a breath of fresh air in a city dominated by heritage hotels. Palais Coburg

In this 19th-century regal residence, the lobby is sleek white stone and plate glass, embodying the hotel's philosophy of "preserving the past—shaping the future." All have fully equipped kitchenettes with a complimentary minibar and espresso machines. A few suites have options like two bathrooms, a gigantic whirlpool bath, or a sauna. One of Austria's best chefs, Silvio Nickol, runs the well-regarded 2-Michelin-star restaurant named after him. Park Hyatt Vienna

$$$$ | Am Hof 2, Vienna, 1010, Austria

Much care was taken to preserve the integrity and historical significance of the elegant building that houses one of Vienna’s newer luxury hotels. The former headquarters of a leading bank, the building's authenticity and beauty are evident throughout: in the public areas, original cassette ceilings are offset by Werkstätte stained-glass windows, and the bank's vault is the centerpiece of the sumptuous spa. Interiors are draped in marble, mirrors, and mother-of-pearl, and brilliant Secession-inspired chandeliers ornament the dining areas. All the artwork adorning the walls was provided for the hotel by Vienna's esteemed Museum of Applied Arts. Rooms range from spacious to palatial, and look out either onto the city's oldest square, the quaint Am Hof, or the haut monde Bognergasse, center of the city's upscale shopping district, the Golden Quarter.

Pros

  • Fuses historic character with contemporary design
  • Remarkable location
  • Extravagant breakfasts (for an extra fee)

Cons

  • Staff can be unfriendly
  • Concierge advice hit-or-miss
  • Room issues may not be resolved quickly

The Penz

$$ | Adolf-Pichler-Platz 3, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

The ultramodern steel-and-glass architecture of this luxury hotel, designed by the renowned French architect Dominique Perrault, is a striking contrast to the Old Town and has a purposeful, business feel that will make traveling executives feel right at home. The rooftop American Bar makes a fine gathering spot, with panoramic Alpine views and a selection of local politicians and captains of industry. Sporthotel Lorünser

$$$$ | Zürs, A-6763, Austria

The hospitable elegance of this hotel draws royalty, including Princess Caroline of Monaco and Princess (formerly Queen) Beatrix of the Netherlands. Like many of the hotels in Zürs, its appeal is understated from the outside, with a plain, almost austere look. Inside, all is seductively enticing, with heaps of gemütlichkeit (good cheer). The Lorünser was one of the first hotels in Zürs, and it continues to improve, though not by increasing its size—local hoteliers have agreed to restrict the growth of their community, and instead focus on continually raising the quality. Carved ceiling beams, open fireplaces, and attractive accessories create a welcoming reception. Rustic wood is used to good effect in the stylish guest rooms. Prices include full board, and the quality of the kitchen is such that you won't feel like eating anywhere else.

Snuggled under the monument-studded Kapuzinerberg and a two-minute walk from the bridge leading to the center of the Altstadt, the Stadtkrug (dated 1353) hits an idyllic, romantic, and quiet vibe, thanks to its mountainside setting. A traditional wrought-iron sign greets you, the lobby tinkles with chandeliers, and the main-floor restaurant is your archetypal, white, classic, vaulted Salzburg sanctuary. Upstairs you find charming rustic rooms. Head up to the roof to enjoy a restaurant that is terraced into the mountainside and set with statues, potted begonias, echoes of Italy, and lovely views.

$$ | Dreifaltigkeitsgasse 2, Zell am See, A-5700, Austria

Redesigned by Austrian architects in a minimalistic and modern style that distances itself from the local Alpine kitsch, this centrally located boutique hotel has a lot to offer. Art exhibitions and cultural events are held regularly in both the restaurant and the hotel. Space to read or relax is offered in the ThinkTank, the upstairs multifunction room, and there's an adjacent rooftop whirlpool (mountain view included) and sauna.

Pros

  • Has its own art gallery
  • In the center of Zell am See
  • Known for great cuisine

Cons

  • No swimming pool (there is an outdoor Jacuzzi)
  • Some noise from the nearby railroad station
  • Some rooms are quite small
