Hotel Daniel

$$ | Europaplatz 1, 8020, Austria

Located next door to the train station, Hotel Daniel's young, fresh concept makes it the go-to budget option in Graz. Less is more here: rooms are equipped with a comfortable bed, but there is no space for a proper desk or bureau. Bikes and e-Vespas are available to rent and you can indulge in the hotel’s own honey, gathered from four bee colonies on the terrace. The entrance uses space in the same economical way as the rooms: it functions as the lobby, café, bar, and lounge.

Pros

  • Great design
  • Good value
  • Close to train station

Cons

  • 15-minute walk from the city center
  • The outside looks a little run-down
  • Open bathroom concept

Hotel Elefant

$$$$ | Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse 4, Salzburg, A-5020, Austria

With its cozy rooms, fantastic central location, and excellent on-site restaurant and bar, Hotel Elefant is an old Salzburg favourite. And we mean old: this 750-year-old house began life as an inn run by Salzburg citizen Hans Goldeisen, who was entrusted with the care of Maximilian II's pet Indian elephant Soliman, a local sensation of the 1500s. Dive into the famous, fluffy Salzburger Nockerl at an outdoor table of the attached Wirtshaus Elefant restaurant.

Pros

  • Lots of history
  • Quiet yet centrally located street
  • Unusual welcome from elephant sculpture in lobby

Cons

  • Some rooms are cramped

Hotel Imperial

$$$$ | Kärntner Ring 16, Vienna, 1010, Austria

One of the landmarks of the Ringstrasse, this hotel has exemplified the grandeur of imperial Vienna ever since it was built. Adjacent to the Musikverein concert hall, the emphasis here is on Old Vienna elegance and privacy, which accounts for a guest book littered with names like José Carreras and Bruce Springsteen. The two main lobbies look as opulent as ballrooms. Guest rooms are furnished with sparkling chandeliers, gorgeous swagged fabrics, and original 19th-century paintings. Suites come with a personal butler. If you're keen to be treated like royalty, this is the place to stay. There's a piano lounge in hotel, perfect for a relaxed cocktail in elegant surrounds.

Pros

  • Discreet, unpretentious staff
  • Excellent restaurant and café
  • Palatial

Cons

  • Some rooms are on the small side
  • Bathrooms can be tiny
  • Restaurant and bar staff sometimes seem untrained

Hotel Innsbruck

$$ | Innrain 3, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

With an ideal location in the heart of Innsbruck, there's an efficient and functional slant here rather than any wow factor, until you look out the window; many rooms have gorgeous views of the Old City, and those on the river side look toward the mountains. The indoor swimming pool in the sixth-floor spa area is a pleasant surprise, with an outdoor relaxation area and mountain view. All rooms are different, so be very specific about your needs. Some with wheelchair access are available.

Pros

  • Lovely sauna area (including indoor pool)
  • Great location
  • Family run

Cons

  • Often has large groups
  • Can be difficult to navigate
  • Business feel rather than Tyrolean charm

$$$$ | Pass-Gschütt-Strasse 23, Gosau am Dachstein, A-4824, Austria

The peaked gables and weather vanes of this 1850s-era villa, one of the most charming hotels in Gosau, give a fairy-tale aura when seen from its pretty park. The original owner, a famed Austrian industrialist and brewery magnate, often welcomed the emperor to his beautiful country house for relaxing hunting retreats. Inside it's cozy, with an open fireplace and warm woodwork, and the outdoor heated pool is a treat after hiking in the Dachstein mountains. Many of the guest rooms have breathtaking views.

Hotel Madlein

$$$$ | Madleinweg 2, Ischgl, A-6561, Austria

Quirkiness reigns supreme at this luxurious design hotel, from the minimalist lobby to the Zen-influenced guest rooms (although some retain Tyrolean wood paneling), and the two nightclubs. The Hummer stretch limousine, available for airport pick-ups, hints at the Aloys/Liebhauser family's network of celebrity acquaintances—Bill Clinton and model Naomi Campbell have dropped by for lunch, and Paris Hilton is a regular guest. At the far side of the Zen garden is a little chalet housing saunas, and the wellness area includes a meditation room and an indoor pool. The outdoor heated pool is a fine place to soak under the stars surrounded by snow after a day of skiing. The bar is a sophisticated meeting place, and the restaurant serves a good mix of international cuisine.

Pros

  • Unique atmosphere
  • Exclusive celebrity vibe
  • Escalator access to ski lift

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Lacking in Tyrolean feel
  • Can feel very busy

Hotel Mariahilf

A comfortable hotel in the center of things, the Mariahilf is across the river from the Old City close to the Kunsthaus. The rooms are nothing fancy, but the hotel is in a pedestrian zone, so the noises you'll hear will be church bells and the sound of people hurrying to and fro. A tram stop is just steps away to take you to the city center, or you can cross one of the two nearby bridges and reach the Altstadt on foot after a short walk.

Pros

Hotel Miramonte

$$$$ | Reitlpromenade 3, Bad Gastein, A-5640, Austria

This mid-century design tower, once the Austrian National Bank’s private spa hotel, sits on the mountainside 10 minutes’ walk from the town center, with scenic Alpine views and easy access to Europe’s first chairlift on the Graukogel. Recently revamped by owner Evelyn’s husband, the architect Ike Ikrath, it’s sophisticated, with the mostly spacious rooms design-led in a palette of grays and tonal 1960s brights. Austrian flair is lent by cowhide rugs and pine headboards. There’s a leafy overhang terrace where you can hear the multi-drop waterfalls that splice the resort, and an Aveda spa offering holistic treatments, yoga twice a day for 9 euros per session, a panorama sauna, and a sunken bath filled with thermal water. Service is exceptional—the place is family-run in the second generation—and the hip restaurant serves quality "slow food," dubbed Alpine Urban Fusion, such as braised lamb with croquets.

Pros

  • Encourages outdoor lifestyle with large terrace, yoga at the waterfall, and firepit
  • Direct access to thermal water spring from the mountains
  • Panorama rooms have balconies with hammocks and views along the Gastein Valley

Cons

  • No swimming pool

Hotel Motto

$$$$ | Mariahilfer Straße 71a, Vienna, 1060, Austria

Paris of the 1920s meets contemporary Vienna in this elegant hotel by famed Viennese restaurateur Bernd Schlacher. The building was a hotel, but while the Neoclassical façade was preserved, the interiors were completely redone and an additional floor added. This floor is now the popular Chez Bernard restaurant, serving French cuisine with an Austrian flair and the even more popular rooftop bar which serves cocktails and small snacks with a fabulous view (reservations recommended). Lovingly thought-out interiors, like the gorgeous fabric on the headboards and wardrobe doors--a vintage print on dark grey silk and a Motto signature, and cocktail-making tables (complete with a lemon and lime), create a memorable stay. Four original chandeliers from The Ritz Paris were bought at auction, and much of the furnishings were created by Austrian artisans. All the Chic category rooms have a French balcony.

Pros

  • Trendy restaurant and bar
  • Good location for shopping and the MuseumsQuartier
  • Fabulous interiors

Cons

  • Some rooms have an open shower concept
  • Busy shopping street
  • Expensive breakfast

Hotel Neutor

A two-minute walk from the Old City, next to the historic tunnel that plows through the Mönchsberg, and directly in front of a stop on several bus lines, this basic hotel has location and transportation covered. The interior is colorful though very dated, and some of the larger rooms have balconies. Parking is available in the small on-site lot or in the underground garage across the street, and buses connecting to the city center and the main station stop right outside the front door.

Pros

  • Excellent location
  • Easy access to public transportation

Hotel Ohr

$$$ | Rusterstrasse 51, Eisenstadt, A-7000, Austria

Personal service is the hallmark of this family-run hotel and restaurant close to the town center, with a selection of "comfort" rooms attractively furnished in natural woods and whites with pastel accents, along with some slightly older (and smaller) "standard" rooms. The rustic wood-panel restaurant has a menu that changes seasonally—lamb and fresh herbs in the spring, wild mushrooms and berries in the summer, and game and goose in the fall—while the wine comes from the family vineyards. In pleasant weather the canopied outdoor dining terrace is a green oasis.

Pros

  • Excellent food in cozy restaurant
  • Bicycles available to rent

Hotel Ritzlerhof

$$$$ | Ritzlerhof 1, Sautens, A-6432, Austria

Spectacularly located in the village of Sautens, on a shelf in the hillside high above the Ötz Valley, the Ritzlerhof is single-mindedly purposed toward meditational levels of peace and relaxation. This is not a ski hotel—it's far from the lifts, though not impossibly so—but walks of all grades are on the doorstep, from a stroll to a nearby lake (the highest and warmest in Tyrol) to strenuous mountain hikes. Originally a high pasture farmhouse, it became a gasthaus in 1949 and has gradually become more luxurious, with an emphasis on being at one with nature. Suite 117 is exquisite, occupying a corner with a vast panorama of the valley and peaks, a cozy fire, and a private sauna, but all rooms have a balcony or terrace on which breakfast can be served.

Pros

  • Idyllic location
  • Heated indoor and outdoor pools
  • Lots of peace and quiet

The à la carte restaurant provides a delightful setting for creative dinners, featuring fresh local ingredients when possible. There are some excellent, mostly Austrian, wines on the menu.

Hotel Schwärzler

$$$ | Landstrasse 9, Bregenz, A-6900, Austria

Bregenz's most upmarket option has guest rooms that offer clean, crisp, modern lines and muted colors (and, occasionally, balconies overlooking the serene garden). In summer you can also eat out on the terrace. The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the center of town, or there's a bus stop a few steps down the road.

Hotel Stein

$$$ | Giselakai 3, Salzburg, A-5020, Austria

Standing tall over the Staatsbrücke and looking across at the Old City, Hotel Stein provides a high-end, design-forward, adults-only accommodation option at the very heart of Salzburg. The building may be historic, but the interior is unapologetically modern, with a blue sky/lagoon theme running throughout the bright and airy lobby, the plushly decorated bedrooms, the soothing wellness center, and even the al fresco Steinterrasse restaurant. Avoid the elevator and take the stairs to see the hotel's most striking design feature: a chandelier-like installation made of hundreds of blue glass discs that hang seven floors down from the ceiling.

Pros

  • Convenient Neustadt location
  • Stunning features from Venetian glassblower Barovier & Toso
  • Terrace restaurant with amazing view

Cons

  • Decor won't be to everyone's tastes

Skiers will be right next to the Giggijoch chairlift to Hochsölden at this sprawling yellow complex; the famous lift is also open all summer to give hikers and mountain bikers a flying start to their day. Löwen Hotel

$$$$ | Silvrettastrasse 8, Schruns, A-6780, Austria

This enormous hotel looms over the heart of Schruns, but step inside and you'll find a welcoming (if not exactly intimate) place; a modern take on a traditional Austrian abode, with the rustic dark-wood theme carried elegantly through into the comfortable rooms. The hotel is in the center of a grassy garden platform, which forms a greenbelt around the main building and serves as a roof for the ground-floor pool and restaurants. The excellent Löwen Stube restaurant, with its graceful table settings and candlelight, offers a choice of eight- to nine-course menus that artfully blend international fare with regional specialties, though it's only open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday. For lunch or dinner on weekdays, try the hotel's other dining option, Brasserie Leonis, which serves à la carte international cuisine at less inflated prices.

Pros

The rooms are compact and contemporary with many vintage items, like the headboards made from the original furniture. Request a room facing the back with a balcony.
