Big Al's Island Grill

$$

After a few days of local staples and upscale eateries, you may find yourself searching for a great burger. You will find a huge selection of burgers in this ’50s-era-designed diner, including the Pretzel Burger, served in a pretzel bun, or the Hawaiian Volcano Island Burger with grilled pineapple, jalapeño, teriyaki glaze, and Jack cheese. If you dare, there’s Big Al’s Tomahawk Burger, topped with smoked bacon, grilled onions, melted cheddar, cholula sauce, and fried egg. Hungry diners can try the Big Al’s Slider Challenge. If you can down 12 sliders, 18 onion rings, and a drink all in 30 minutes, you get yourself on their Wall of Fame and go home with a Slider Challenge T-shirt. There are plenty of options beyond burgers.

Birdcage Bar and Restaurant

$$$

This restaurant is a little more upscale than most of the other dining spots on the island, with a lovely view of the ocean and tablecloths in the evening. It's become the place to be on Saturday nights, when a sizzling menu of barbecue ribs, chicken, and lobster (in season) combines with live music. The rest of the week offers a menu that changes frequently and a full bar with specialty drinks. Arrive early to secure waterfront tables, but note that a table around the Osprey's pool is also lovely. Simple island weddings are also a possibility here.

Conch & Coconuts

$$

Conch & Coconuts is a great little restaurant located in the newly built Grace Bay Market. Everything on the dining menu has something to do with either conch, coconuts, or both! There's also a great island-inspired drinks menu—try out a Middle Caicos Mosquito or a Grand Turk Donkey Juice to let loose.

The Cove Restaurant + Beach Bar

$$$
Situated on the beach on the Caicos Banks side of the Sailrock Resort (it's man-made, but you'd never know it), this casual beach bar is the perfect spot to grab lunch while exploring the island. They rotate three different menus offering a variety of salads, burgers, wraps, and homemade pizzas. The food here is casual, but it's a creative twist on what you'll have come to expect in this remote island setting.

Danny Buoy's

$$

A true local watering hole, this bar always has a mix of locals and vacationers. There are those who come here for the drinks and entertainment but also to dine on traditional Irish favorites such as corned beef and cabbage. They are open until 2 am some nights and even have a late-night menu so you can get a bite long after most kitchens have closed. The inside is not recommended for families. If you have children along, go early and take a seat outdoors.

The Deck at Seven Stars

$$$

It's hard to think of a more alluring setting than The Deck, perched on the dunes overlooking the ocean at the Seven Stars resort. Tiki torches, fire pits, and awnings lend plenty of chic to this otherwise much more casual sister of the property's more formal restaurant, Seven. Nosh on small plates, or consider one of the fine lobster or pasta dishes. The Deck is also great choice if you'd like to hear the vocal stylings of local songbirds, Barbara Johnson and Tess Charles.

Dolphin Grill at the Ocean and Beach Resort

$$

Located at South Caicos Ocean and Beach Resort, the grill is the only restaurant that operates oceanside. Here you can find a diverse menu that includes burgers, chicken, and freshly caught fish, as well as some exquisite lobster dishes (when in season). At night this turns into a gathering place for visitors and locals alike; it can be quite lively. On the flip side, it's also one of the few spots to get a decent breakfast any day of the week.

Drift

$$$

This little gem is quite unusual to be associated with such a large resort. Simple and lovely, set by the pool and within walking distance from the beach, this open-air restaurant has offerings for brunch and dinner. Their Neapolitan pizzas are certainly worth the hype, but if you're looking for a more hearty meal, their Premium Angus Tenderloin has also received rave reviews. It isn't frequented by the local crowd much, but this hidden treasure is worth the visit.

Located at the Provo Golf Club, Fairways is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. Hot or cold breakfast is offered during the week, while Sunday brunch features such favorites as waffles and eggs Benedict. Lunches are snack-style bites along with an array of sandwiches and salads. Golfers will enjoy the view down the fairway and over a green. On Friday and Saturday nights they serve bar food and show sporting events.

Frank's Cafe

$$

There's a wooden sign on the roadside, but none on the restaurant—just look for the bright orange house at the top of the steep, rocky driveway. It's the only spot in Bottle Creek for traditional home-cooked island food, including fish fingers, conch prepared every which way, and a few non-seafood dishes, too. They're open Monday through Friday, but you can call ahead to see if they can accommodate you on a Saturday.

The Grill at Grace Bay Club

$$$

The Grill's setting, right on Grace Bay Beach, is simply lovely. Tables are set upon a wooden deck, with the menu more casual than that of Grace Bay Club’s Infiniti. Typical fare includes a small selection of sandwiches, pizzas, and entrées like jerk chicken or grilled snapper for lunch. Dinner includes salads, pizzas, and dishes with an Italian bent. Of course, you can try their version of conch salad if you want something a little more local. Tuesday is Caribbean Beach BBQ, complete with a welcome cocktail in a coconut and a vast menu of local specialties. The Grill is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (in season).

Hemingway's Restaurant

$$$$

The casual yet gorgeous setting, with a patio and deck offering unobstructed views of Grace Bay, makes this one of the most popular dining venues on the island. At lunch, you can’t miss the conch, served however you prefer, but the mango shrimp salad is also excellent. Live music a couple of nights a week adds to the ambience.

Homey's

This is a must-try, as it has delicious home-style island cooking. They have a wide array of local dishes and something for everyone. For around $10, you can order a full meal consisting of peas or okra and rice, a barbecue main, and another side. Located directly next to the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex, this is also the only drive-thru restaurant in the country. So just look for the row of cars lined up on the side of a brown building.

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

$$

One of the largest Margaritavilles in the world opens its doors when a cruise ship is parked at the dock. Tables are scattered around a large winding pool; there's even a DJ, a swim-up bar, and it's right next to the FlowRider (a wave pool where you can surf on land—for a fee). You can enjoy 52 flavors of margaritas or the restaurant's own beer, Landshark, while you eat casual bar food, including wings, quesadillas, burgers, and fish dishes. The food is decent, but the people-watching is great and there is always something fun to do.

Konky Joe's

Occupying the right-hand side of the shack that houses Friskyz, this is the spot for conch. In fact, it's basically all they serve—and it's the freshest in town. Las Brisas Restaurant & Bar

$$$

With picture-postcard views of the intensely blue waters of Chalk Sound, the setting here is deliriously lovely. This is the only restaurant on Provo that offers an excellent authentic paella (if you order this, give it time—the flavors have to simmer). The menu also includes tapas, so you can enjoy a long lunch, indulging while you gaze at the gorgeous water. Dinner takes a little longer, as everything is made to order; you pick out your fish or meat, decide how you want it prepared, and choose a sauce for it. Try any one of their beef entrées, as they are all wonderful. If you want to experience the sound from the water, Las Brisas also has kayaks and paddleboards that you can rent to go around Chalk Sound.

Last Chance Bar and Grill

$$

Overlooking the serene waters of Bottle Creek, this little spot makes a great stop for day-trippers going to or from Middle Caicos, as well as for those enjoying the beauty of North Caicos for a day or longer. In addition to making smaller items such as conch fritters and burgers, owner Howard Gibbs provides full meals of fresh-caught grouper and local lobster at reasonable prices. Call ahead to find out what's being served that day. It's tiny—just five tables. Housed in an old stone-constructed home, you'll find true island ambience indoors or on the restaurant's large wooden terrace that offers spectacular views.

Island native Patricia Ann Simmons can give you a lesson in the medicinal qualities of her garden plants and periwinkle flowers, as well as provide excellent native cuisine for a very reasonable price in her comforting Salt Cay home. Home cooking doesn't get any closer to home than this. Try her conch fritters, cracked conch, or chicken-and-chips for lunch and the steamed grouper or red snapper with peas and rice for dinner. As with most places in Salt Cay, you must place your order by 2 pm and tell them what time you want to eat dinner. Pat cooks only upon request with reservation.
