The Best Hotel in The North Coast and the Cordillera Central, Puerto Rico

Background Illustration for Hotels

High-class resorts aren't limited exclusively to San Juan and the eastern coast; on the north coast, travelers who aren't constrained by a budget will find Dorado, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve sitting on 1,400 acres, many of them prime beachfront. But for the most part, paradores and other modest lodgings are the norm in the small towns, especially in the Cordillera. In this part of the island there are seldom more than two or three options in any given town. Sometimes there's one hotel—take it or leave it. You'd better take it, especially if you're traveling on a weekend. The best lodgings, rustic retreats set beside a river or on acres of lush forest, are often booked solid. Make sure to call ahead, as it's a long way between towns.

Hyatt Residence Club Dorado, Hacienda del Mar

$$$ | 301 Rte. 693, 00646, Puerto Rico

This Hyatt-branded vacation club features studio, one-, and two-bedroom condos, but don't worry: all are about the same price as other nearby resorts. It generally has little to no crowds, which can be an asset if you're looking to relax on your own. Plus, the beach here is gorgeous, the lazy river pool is one of the loveliest on the island, and the legendary East and West golf courses have hosted many tournaments. There is a casual on-site restaurant, but many guests opt to eat out or to cook in their condos.

Pros

  • Lots of peace and quiet
  • Beachfront setting
  • Great golf

Cons

  • Too isolated
  • Need to drive off-site for additional dining options
  • $20 resort fee added for each night's stay
