The wait may be long as Downtown is popular with locals, but the outdoor terrace with a full bar is a great place to relax until your table is ready.

Duffy's

$$

At some point during your time in Vieques, you should end up at Duffy's, the island's most popular hangout, where customers tend to sit elbow-to-elbow around the bar (the owner is a real character, and locals love to to chew the fat with him). Don't dismiss the food, though: in addition to burgers, fries, and other standards, there are chalkboard specials like conch fritters, scallop ceviche, grilled rib eye, or pan-seared pork loin—all a cut above the usual beach fare. Wraps, sandwiches, and fried finger foods round out the menu.

Sweet and savory brunch selections range from coconut brioche French toast with caramelized bananas and nuts, to pizza frittatas. Lunch brings delicious, classic, Neapolitan pizzas baked in a handmade brick oven. The catch-of-the-day ceviche—caught in Isabela—is perfectly marinated, and lobster is usually on the dinner menu. Make-your-own pasta bowls and pizzas are available for both lunch and dinner.

El Hamburguer

$ | Puerta de Tierra
After a day at Playa Escambron, grab a bite and a beer at this hole- in-the-wall joint, where a tiny kitchen rapidly custom-charbroils burgers. You might want to order two, as they're small, like sliders; regardless, you can top them with Roquefort, cheddar, or American cheese. The sweet-potato fries are tasty, too; add a side salad for $1 more. This place is always packed with locals, so there might be a wait to get a table, but the turnover is quick.

The bistec encebollado, goat fricassee, and shredded beef stew stand out on the comida criolla menu. A tiny back porch is filled with plants, and the dining room is filled with fanciful depictions of life on the street outside. This popular restaurant is named for its floor-to-ceiling brick walls covered in original paintings available for purchase. It's known primarily for steaks—and offers an excellent filet mignon—but given its coastal location, there's also a wide selection of fresh seafood. The zarzuela, a seafood stew, is one favorite dish. Lobster is also a specialty, and you can order it a la criolla (in a spicy stew), a la parrilla (from the grill), or ajillo (with a garlic sauce). A meal in such a pleasant dining room, served by skillful red-jacketed waiters and accompanied by a bottle of wine from the ample cellar, leaves you with fond memories.

One among the ever-changing cast of restaurants along Route 187, the New Aquarium, like its neighbors, won't win any awards for decor and design. The setting here is decidedly laid-back, with plastic tables and chairs serving as the humble backdrop for some stellar seafood. Vegetarians should request the special meatless mofongo.
