Ceiba
A calm coastal area, Ceiba is a small town and municipality named after Puerto Rico's native Ceiba tree. It is bordered by Fajardo to the north, Naguabo to the south, Atlantic Ocean to the East, and Rio Grande to the west. Historically, Ceiba was known for its military presence and community as it contained the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. With the withdrawal of the U.S. Navy from Vieques after decades of protest over military testing and its effects, the station was no longer needed and closed in 2004.
The José Aponte de la Torre Airport was built in its place. This small international airport offers daily flights to Vieques and Culebra, the quickest way to get to Puerto Rico's other two inhabited islands. They also have short leg international flights to nearby Caribbean destinations.
Ceiba is the site of the Ceiba Ferry Terminal, a favorite for locals commuting to Vieques and Culebra and the most budget-friendly option for transport to these islands.
