4 Best Hotels in El Yunque and the Northeast, Puerto Rico

Background Illustration for Hotels

The east coast has a wide variety of lodgings, from small inns and guesthouses in the mountains to large, lavish resorts along the coast. Government-approved paradores are also available. Often translated as "country inns," paradores offer affordable Puerto Rican hospitality and the cozy comforts of home outside the San Juan metro area. These small, privately owned properties are usually quite picturesque and found throughout the island's interior and more remote coastal towns. If you wish to get away from it all with a neatly packaged trip, eastern Puerto Rico has some of the island's top resorts: the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort and El Conquistador, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. You’ll also find extensive facilities and services at large, self-contained complexes like the Wyndham Grand Río Mar and the Gran Meliá, making the list of regional offerings more than complete.

El Conquistador Resort

$$$ | 1000 Av. El Conquistador, Fajardo, 00738, Puerto Rico

El Conquistador is one of Puerto Rico's most iconic hotels. This is a place where pastel-painted "villages" of ultramodern accommodations are arranged on an oceanside bluff and a shuttle whisks guests to a beach on Palomino Island. Furnishings here are low to the ground, ensuring that nothing obscures the ocean view. There are seven different pools on-site, as well as a water park for kids (and kids at heart). The resort has a cluster of top-drawer restaurants specializing in everything from steak and seafood to diner-style burgers, and a handful of boutiques offer retail therapy.

Pros

  • Bright, spacious rooms
  • Unbeatable views of nearby islands
  • Good dining options

Cons

  • Large-scale, posthurricane renovation in progress
  • Long waits at funicular running between levels
  • Hidden fees including parking and kids' club (and you need a car)
