2 Best Hotels in Jamaica

Background Illustration for Hotels

Jamaica is the birthplace of the Caribbean all-inclusive resort, a concept that started in Ocho Rios and later spread throughout the island, so that now most hotel rates are all-inclusive. Package prices usually include airport transfers, accommodations, three meals a day, snacks, all bar drinks (often including premium liquors) and soft drinks, a full menu of sports options (including scuba diving and golf at high-end resorts), nightly entertainment, and all gratuities and taxes. At most all-inclusives, the only surcharges are for such luxuries as spa and beauty treatments, telephone calls, tours, vow-renewal ceremonies, and weddings (often included at high-end establishments).

The all-inclusive market is especially strong with couples. To maintain a romantic atmosphere (no Marco Polo games in the pool), some resorts have minimum age requirements from 12 to 18. Other properties court families with supervised kids' programs, family-friendly entertainment, and in-room amenities for young travelers.

The Blue House Boutique Bed & Breakfast

$ | Ocho Rios, Jamaica Fodor's Choice

This stylish boutique B&B is a nice alternative to North Coast all-inclusives; fabulous feasts (often with Jamaican, Chinese, and international flavors) are available for guests who wish to have dinner as well as breakfast here. The owner, Elise, goes out of her way to arrange tours of the "real" Jamaica—taking in places and people off the beaten track—and on-site massages help you wind down afterward. Service is impeccable.

Tensing Pen Resort

$ | West End Rd., Negril, Jamaica Fodor's Choice

This rustic but elegant resort is hip without being pretentious; it's a top spot for affordable chic and the kind of place that makes you want to check in and just laze in your room, or in a hammock, with a book. The cottages are made of stone and wood with thatch roofs; some are on stilts, and they all have big beds. Continental breakfast is included in the reasonably priced room rates; you can have all your meals at the hotel's restaurant or go out and explore the nearby restaurants on Negril's West End.

Pros

  • Unique accommodations
  • Great snorkeling
  • Spa and yoga services available

Cons

  • Perched on the cliffs as it is, you need to work a bit to reach the beach below
