In Santo Domingo, several hotels have casinos, including the Catalonia Santo Domingo (formerly the Hilton Santo Domingo), which houses the Casino Presidente with the latest slots and tables. There’s also Occidental El Embajador Hotel and Casino; Barcelo Hotel & Casino (which although no longer in vogue, has a piano bar and nightclub, too); Diamante Casino (adjacent to the Sheraton Santo Domingo); and Renaissance Santo Domingo Jaragua Hotel & Casino, which reopened in 2015 and has all been contemporized.

This is the cigar club that other cigar bars look up to, a classy, sceney bar and salon elegant enough that you don't need to be a smoker to enjoy it. A high-tech ventilation system keeps the room from being unpleasantly smoky. And, of course, Fuente cigars are among the best, pairing well with the finest aged rums or cognacs from the bar. This club is populated by well-heeled capitaleños, so dress the part, or you may be turned away.

This hideaway off the typical tourist radar is a safe haven, where the local owners and residents will welcome you to their fun. The bar’s provocative name is as titillating as the creative cocktails themselves, all made with premium liquor, fresh herbs and juices, and house-made syrups. Another intriguing element is the new-generation jukebox: no quarters needed. The playlist includes rock, a lot of Latin music, and even Bruce Springsteen. Seating is indoors and out. Should you need to graze, simple tapas range from hummus to olives on ice, all for very little.

Diamante knows how to make casinos popular, and so it is with this latest effort. The action includes some 50 slot machines and 16 gaming tables. You can also play a couple of hands of blackjack, shoot craps, or take a spin at the roulette wheel. There's action here 24/7. Diamante's disco, Trio, is a hot ticket, too. Security runs a safe ship.

Close to La Briciola, this Spanish-tiled landmark has a contemporary look and primarily twentysomething patrons who can dance to whatever the DJ spins. That is mainly electronic music but could include pop, Latin, reggaeton, and bachata; on weekends, the later it gets the more techno you'll hear. French wines are available, and there is a full bar as well as some light fare and snacks. DJs spin mostly on the weekends; there are no live bands but no lines either.

The crowd here covers all classes of Dominicans, from the poorer Zone residents and the old men playing dominoes on the plastic tables on up to a wealthy and well-dressed group stopping by after an art opening. It's as funky and real a slice of life as it was before the neighborhood became so gentrified. When the traditional dancing begins, you’ll see all ages moving to the Cuban beat, with some of the oldsters seriously proficient in their merengue moves.

After a recent renovation, this Malecón casino is the largest in the capital with some 50 slot machines, baccarat, roulette, craps, blackjack, and Pai Gow poker tables. Ladies dress for this casino, men likewise.

In addition to a place to get a simple, casual meal, this mellow, youth-oriented hot spot is primarily a bar. However, live music performances are a fairly regular presence when there isn't a DJ working the room. A large wooden deck is the preferred place to hang out. Sangria is the house specialty, red, white, and rose—even ginger and spicy mango.

This avant-garde wine bar and wine store was created by the major wine distributor El Catador. Cushy leather armchairs and hardwood floors help create a clubby atmosphere. If you want to eat, there's a good menu of tapas. You will want to buy one of the 500 bottles of wine from around the wine-making world. Generally there are a dozen wines for tasting, but there are no samplings during the busy Christmas holidays.

This is the only discoteca inside a cave once inhabited by Taino Indians...and bats. (Santo Domingo has a network of natural caves within city limits.) As you descend, you see hundreds of heads bobbing and bodies gyrating among the stalactites: it's a unique sight. Banquettes and seating are carved into the limestone walls ornamented with Taino pictographs. There are multiple bars and dual dance floors, but it's only open on Friday and Saturday nights and for special events (like those sponsored by liquor distributors). These are often open to the public, or whoever wants to pay the cover, which can be $20. Lights and videos flash, and apparently it's not subject to curfew. To find out what's going on, talk to your concierge.

Punto Y Corcho, on Plaza Andalucia, is where wine (by the glass and bottle) and local and international liquors are the order of the night. This is a great date and late-night spot, and it tends to appeal to mature and sophisticated types. You'll hear live music most weekends.

The cool, older crowd comes here to graze, drink, and dance, even though there's no real dance floor. The sound system is impressive, and wide-screen TVs show music videos while the DJ cranks. Patrons just stand around and groove, and chances are they will make new friends—as might you. A perennial fave, it is more and more being adopted by the young.
