Fodor's Expert Review Little Pomander Guest House
16 Pomander Rd., Paget, PG 02, Bermuda See on Map
This charming cottage is in the perfect location, not right in town but close enough to walk. The circa-1600 house—one of the island's oldest—is on a quiet one-way residential street that edges along a narrow inlet of Hamilton Harbour. You won't find any lavish amenities, but the grassy backyard overlooking the water is a pleasant place to barbecue and watch the boats go by.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Long past its heyday, this small property is in dire need of an update. For privacy and all of the modern conveniences, look elsewhere.
room
Decorated with colorful carpeting and bold floral prints, and outfitted with microwaves and mini fridges. One highly requested room has a patio with steps leading down to the lawn, while another is divided by a large unlikely bulge—which turns out to be the house's old stove.
YOU SHOULD KNOW There's a fine line between cute and tacky and, depending on your opinion, these rooms will fall into either one category or the other.
bathroom
About as bare-bones as they come, but at least everything works... most of the time.
lobby
You're staying in an extremely old Bermudian house, so don't be shocked to smell mold or spot a trail of ants.
dining
A basic breakfast featuring a humble selection of cereal, bagels, and toast is served daily. Guests also have access to the kitchen to prepare meals at their own convenience.
The closest grocery store is the Supermart on Front Street. If you decide to walk--it's about 20 minutes away by foot--you can easily hail a taxi for the ride back.
drinking
For cocktails, catch a taxi into Hamilton or walk to the nearby Harbourfront Restaurant, located just across the marina. In addition to serving award-winning seafood and sushi, they host a well-attended happy hour on weeknights from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Hamilton's main drag, Front Street, is a 20-minute walk from the property, while South Shore's beaches are within an 8-minute drive. Call a taxi or rent a scooter from Oleander Cycles or Smatt's Cycle Livery.
Restaurants
Located within the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, Homer's Café (2-minute drive) offers a delicious array of breakfast and lunch fare plus discounted admission to the museum with every purchase. Vegetarians and vegans are welcome at the fresh and healthy Village Pantry (11-minute drive) in Flatts Village. The restaurant is warm and inviting and the poke bowls are excellent.
WHY WE LIKE IT
On an island where accommodations can add up to a month's rent--or more!--this property is an affordable and, shall we say, antique alternative. Rooms are tidy and the harbor views and breeze are refreshing after a day at the beach. So long as you don't expect all the bells and whistles and aren't allergic to mold, you'll be right at home at this budget-friendly cottage.
