Fodor's Expert Review The Greene's Guest House
71 Middle Rd., Jennings Bay, Southampton, SN BX, Bermuda See on Map
Avoid the crowds and head west to this spacious home where you'll be treated to beautiful views of the Great Sound from the huge front and backyards. On the Bermuda Railway Trail in the quiet western end of Southampton Parish, this large family-run guesthouse is a cheap stay in a tranquil area for those who don't mind an out-of-date bedroom. Whale Bay Beach is a 10-minute walk away, and the bus stops in front. It's also close to the Port Royal Golf Course and a mini-golf course. Breakfast is included; you can use the kitchen to prepare lunch or dinner.
This property is very isolated. You should purchase bus and ferry passes or rent a scooter so that you aren't reliant on taxis.
room
Rooms are clean and some have water views, but don't expect the height of luxury.
YOU SHOULD KNOW This property sits right along one of the island's busiest roads and the noise from passing cars and bikes is very noticeable.
bathroom
The undeniably modest bathrooms are in need of an update.
lobby
The comfortable living room is an inviting area for guests to read and relax while watching TV and playing board games.
pool
A large swimming pool overlooks the Great Sound. If you're lucky you may get the whole pool area to yourself!
dining
This property's redeeming quality is the hearty, homemade breakfast, served daily in the charming dining room.
drinking
There's no bar on the property, but the small refrigerator in your room can be used to chill beers.
LOCATION
Getting Around
On weekdays, catch a ride into Hamilton from the nearby Rockaway ferry terminal. You can also rent a scooter--Oleander Cycles and Smatt's Cycle Livery are the two main companies--or take a bus from Middle Road.
Restaurants
Set atop the Port Royal Golf Course, Bella Vista Bar & Grill (3-minute drive) offers Italian-inspired cuisine and panoramic views. Make the trek up to Dockyard for breakfast, lunch or dinner at Anchor Restaurant, Bar & Lounge (17-minute drive). On Sundays, experience the authentic Bermudian tradition of codfish and potatoes with bananas, boiled eggs and avocado--don't knock it 'till you try it!
WHY WE LIKE IT
While it's a far cry from luxury, this guest house is an inexpensive alternative with great views and a full-course breakfast. The unhurried pace, remote location, and charming albeit outdated decor are a reminder of how Bermuda used to be. If you don't mind solitude or renting a scooter, this can be an awesome base for a budget vacation.
