8 Best Hotels in Bermuda

Background Illustration for Hotels

Few places in the world boast the charm of Bermuda's curvaceous, colorful shoreline. It's a boon, then, that the lagoons, coves, and coasts, as well as its inland sanctuaries, are filled with equally colorful, alluring places to stay. But wherever you opt to stay, you are never far away from picture-perfect water views.

The quintessential accommodation on the island is a pink cottage amid manicured gardens and coral-stone pathways. Terraced whitewashed roofs (designed to capture rainwater) sit atop walls of pinks, peaches, and pastels, looking like cakes of ice cream in pink-wafer sand. Add a waterfront setting, and voilà—the lure of Bermuda.

If you find yourself craving a beachfront resort, and you can afford it, several places offer quality right-on-the-sand stays; another handful are a stone's throw away from the beach. The island is blessed with clean, well-maintained public beaches that are easily reached by bus and aren't far from any point on the island.

Hamilton has many sophisticated lodging choices, but vacationers looking for beachfront relaxation will be disappointed in the beachless capital city. In fact, all noteworthy beaches are on the southern side of the island. With only a couple of exceptions, beachfront lodging choices are along a 7-mile stretch of coast that runs along the central to western tail of the island, west from Paget to Warwick, Southampton, and Sandys. Lodging choices on the north coast of the island often are on glittering Hamilton Harbour or have deepwater access to the Atlantic, but not beaches.

Bermuda is a land of cottage colonies, cliff-top apartments, and beachfront resort hotels. Hidden along small parish roads, however, you can also find family-run, flower-filled guesthouses and simple, inexpensive efficiencies. In fact, with the exception of the Fairmont Southampton, and the tall but unobtrusive larger main building at Elbow Beach, there are no high-rises in Bermuda. And nowhere do neon signs sully the landscape. Indeed, many of Bermuda's lodging properties are guesthouses, identifiable only by small, inconspicuous signs or plaques. Those who prefer bed-and-breakfasts will have no problem finding quaint retreats with local attention.

Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

An upscale cliffside property that remains a popular wedding, honeymoon, and luxurious vacation getaway, the Reefs offers serenity and old-world charm, as well as a private beach, excellent dining options, and top-notch service. The once-small resort has changed dramatically over the years and now offers 19 time-share condos in addition to poolside and cliffside rooms and suites. All rooms have ocean views and balconies or patios, but not all are created equal: the suites near the beach and overlooking the ocean have Jacuzzi tubs and large walk-in showers for two. The spa is also a must-try, having earned awards as one of the best in the Caribbean. Breakfast is included, and additional meal plans are available upon request.  For seclusion and tranquility, the Point suites perched above wave-washed boulders at the far end of the resort are second to none.

Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 30 King's Point Rd., Somerset, MA 02, Bermuda Fodor's Choice

No other Bermuda resort uses its privileged setting better—the cottage colony's 30 acres on a peninsula near the western end of the island create a sense of meandering expansiveness. Cambridge Beaches has a coat of arms that reads Prima et Optima, or \"First and Best.\" The First? Yes—it's the island's oldest cottage colony, and it leans into this distinction with simple retro styling. The Best? Well, if you want a pervasive sense of tranquility and relaxed refinement, then that's a fact, too. Many large properties on the island are centered on one main beach, but Cambridge has four, including beautiful Long Bay Beach and tiny Turtle Cove (backed by a chic infinity pool). The varying sizes, styles, and locations of the cottages and rooms make for a wide range of prices. Less expensive rooms open onto lawns and gardens, but overlook the same wide ocean. Dine poolside at Pastel, or under the stars at Breezes (reservation required). Cambridge also offers the Ocean Spa, one of the very best in Bermuda.

Pros

  • Private and refined, with excellent spa
  • Wide range of room and cottage options
  • Beautiful grounds and beaches

Cons

  • Far removed from rest of island
  • Grounds not accessible for elderly or disabled
  • Older facilities could use modernizing

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

$$$$ | 11 Blue Hole Hill, CR 04, Bermuda

The ocean is never far from sight at this popular resort best known for its two on-site caves; you can treat yourself to a spa treatment in one, then go for a relaxing swim in the other. The 21-acre hillside resort is pleasant, although it overlooks the airport directly across Castle Harbour, a reminder that you can't stay on this beautiful island forever. The resort is quite commercialized by Bermuda standards, and it can get crowded with package tour groups, as Grotto Bay offers the only all-inclusive supplement option on the island. The beach is small, but you also have the resort pool, next to an outdoor restaurant, hot tub, and children's playground. Kids can watch fish being fed from a small lagoon off the beach (an inlet that feeds the caves) and try out the waterslide for size. For adults, sightseeing, scuba diving, and snorkeling cruises depart regularly from the on-site deepwater dock.

Pros

  • Kids' program in summer
  • On-site aquatic activities
  • All-inclusive available for extra charge

Cons

  • Small beach
  • Can get crowded with package tour groups due to all-inclusive option
  • Airport noise

Pompano Beach Club

$$$$ | 36 Pompano Beach Rd., SB 03, Bermuda

Pompano, which is passionately run by an American family, understands its customers—and those customers return year after year for the casual atmosphere and beachfront location. The suites and townhouses are dressed in a simple coastal style. A dining room with two-story windows overlooking the ocean makes it one of the most dramatic dining spots on the island; even the spa and the game room offer postcard-worthy views. Of the three hot tubs, two enjoy a privileged cliffside perch overlooking the beach. Take advantage of the water sports equipment, paddleboards, and glass-bottom kayaks available for rent, and lose yourself in the beauty of the crystal-clear, shallow water. Pompano follows the Modified American Plan (MAP), which includes full breakfast and a five-course dinner each day.

The St. Regis Bermuda Resort

$$$$ | 34 Coot Pond Rd., St. George's, GE 03, Bermuda

The St. Regis Bermuda Resort takes full advantage of the incredible views of the sparkling turquoise ocean overlooking St. Catherine's Beach from every angle as you enter the property—most notably through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Once inside the hotel, from the iconic scent to the luxe interior design, there’s a feeling of entering a grand home. Each of the 120 rooms have either a full or partial ocean view, with the west-facing accommodations taking in part of the updated golf course and being treated to the splendor of a Bermuda sunset. Each room is appointed with luxurious fittings and a centerpiece bathtub for taking in the views while you enjoy serious relaxation. The resort also benefits from being mere steps away from the beach, where lounge chairs and umbrellas are available along with icy cold cocktails. There are two pools on the property, both overlooking the beach and one shallower to accommodate younger guests. The restaurant serves Latin-inspired dishes at lunch and in the evening pivots to become the iconic BLT Steak NY, where you can indulge in a 28-day, dry-aged, 36-ounce porterhouse steak. But it's the St. Regis Bar that is the standout here. An incredible mural inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest, said to have been inspired by the shipwreck that led to the first settlement on the island, has been rendered in the many blues reflected in the ocean, seen from the windows opposite, and hangs over the bar where the cocktails include house-made syrups and bitters. The resort also features a spa, fitness center, and children's center.

Pros

  • Beachside resort
  • Luxurious design
  • Incredible views

Cons

  • Some rooms only have limited ocean views
  • Not walking distance from town
  • Smallish beach
