5 Best Hotels in The Abacos, Bahamas

Background Illustration for Hotels

Intimate hotels, cottage-style resorts, and rental homes are the rule in the Abacos. There are a few full-scale resorts in Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay, Green Turtle Cay, and Hope Town—with multiple restaurants, bars, pools, and activities—but most accommodations are more homey. What you might give up in modern amenities you'll gain in privacy and beauty. Many hotels have water views, and with a cottage or private house you may even get your own stretch of beach. Air-conditioning is a standard feature, and more places are adding luxuries like cable TV and wireless Internet. Small and remote doesn't equate with inexpensive, however; it's almost impossible to find lodging for less than $100 a night, and not uncommon to pay more than $300 a night for beachside accommodations with all the conveniences.

Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour Marina

$$$ | East of Conch Sound Marina, Marsh Harbour, Bahamas Fodor's Choice

The largest hotel in Marsh Harbour has a fresh look and feel following a major post–Hurricane Dorian overhaul. The resort centers on its marina and is set on 40 manicured acres overlooking the Sea of Abaco, five minutes from the Marsh Harbour airport or a short ferry ride away from Hope Town on Elbow Cay. The spacious ocean-view rooms have natural stone floors, marble wet bars, built-in hair dryers, and in-room cable TV, with Wi-Fi throughout the sprawling grounds. Use of nonmotorized water-sports equipment is complimentary. Lounge poolside or enjoy fruity rum drinks at the bar while your kids explore the beach playground.

Green Turtle Club Resort & Marina

$$ | North end of White Sound, Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas Fodor's Choice

The long-standing colonial tradition and tone of casual refinement continues at this well-known resort. Cheerful yellow cottages are scattered amid lush trees and shrubs. Villa accommodations have decks overlooking the water and docks for rental boats; poolside rooms are more formal, furnished with mahogany Queen Anne–style furniture, gleaming hardwood floors, and Oriental rugs. Breakfasts and lunches are served on a screened, terra-cotta–tile patio, but it's dinner under the harbor-view dining room's chandeliers that makes the club shine. The modern 40-slip marina makes it easy to dock your boat out front, and in a 10-minute walk, you can be bonefishing in Coco Bay or lying on the secluded Atlantic Ocean beach. If you need anything else, the accommodating hotel staff can arrange it.

Pros

  • Excellent on-site restaurants for casual or fine dining
  • Easy access to great beaches
  • Personalized service

Cons

  • If you're looking for Bahamian casual, this isn't it
  • A golf cart or boat is essential to explore the island
  • Some rooms are a long walk from the hotel amenities

Hope Town Inn & Marina

$$ | Elbow Cay, Bahamas Fodor's Choice

Watch the hustle and bustle (relatively speaking, of course) of Hope Town from this spot across the harbor. When you feel the need to join in the activity or explore the quaint town and surrounding island of Elbow Cay, just catch the on-demand complimentary speedboat shuttle. Most of the rooms and suites at this small but lovely hotel at the base of the lighthouse have kitchens, and there's no additional charge to dock a small rental boat. Two pools, a restaurant, a bar, and a tiny harborside beach spread over 15 acres guarantee you'll find a secluded spot.

Pros

  • Great spot for families
  • Swim-up bar serving excellent cocktails
  • Short walk to the lighthouse

Cons

  • Across the harbor from everything else
  • Few on-site activities
  • Some cottages are remotely located from the rest of the property
