Victoria Chau Doc Hotel

$$$$ | 1 Le Loi, Chau Doc, Vietnam Fodor's Choice

With a prime riverfront position in the heart of Chau Doc, the French-colonial style hotel gives a charming taste of a bygone era, while delivering modern service and a good restaurant; watching the river traffic from your balcony or the pool terrace is a delight. Rooms are spacious, well-appointed, and have a heritage feel, with wood floors, sitting area, and views of the Bassac (Hau) River or Chau Doc's street life—double-glazing keeps it peaceful. The pool is a welcome respite from the Mekong Delta humidity. Bassac Restaurant makes the most of its river outlook and serves a selection of Western and Vietnamese dishes, as well as a fairly generous, varied buffet breakfast included in the stay. The hotel can book boat tours (it has its own pier) and has bicycles to take for a spin.

Pros

  • Terrific central location
  • Unparalleled views of the river
  • Swimming pool

Cons

  • Slow elevator
  • Hotel often serves tour groups
  • A little dated

Victoria Nui Sam Lodge

$$$$ | Vinh Dong I, Chau Doc, Vietnam Fodor's Choice

Halfway up Nui Sam (Sam Mountain), this collection of charming stone cottages is a relaxing getaway from the bustle of Mekong Delta towns, but close enough to take day trips in and around Chau Doc—and it has stunning views over brilliant green rice paddies and flood plains. The large rooms are decorated simply, allowing the views to take center stage, and each has a private terrace. The skypool and pool bar and La Giang Restaurant share the magnificent views. An on-site vegetable garden provides some of the produce for the hotel's restaurant and its cooking courses. Victoria Nui Sam Lodge provides a regular shuttle to Chau Doc, which is only 7 km (4 miles) away.

Pros

  • Wonderful views
  • Peaceful location
  • Family rooms

Cons

  • Away from the river
  • The mountainside location/stairs make it unsuitable for people with mobility problems
  • Isolated

Anh Nguyet Hotel

$ | 207 Phan Ngoc Hien, Ca Mau, Vietnam

Anh Nguyet has spacious carpeted rooms with air-conditioning, TV, refrigerator, writing desk, a small sitting area, not-too-hard beds, and slightly grimy bay windows; the staff speak some English. The bathrooms, most with tubs, are looking a little tired. Reception staff can help organize car with driver and boat hire and bus or air tickets.

Bamboo Cottages and Restaurant

$$$$ | Vung Bau Bay, Phu Quoc, Vietnam

The first "off-the-grid" and solar-powered resort in Vietnam, Bamboo Cottages has evolved a bit but still maintains a simple, quiet vibe of bungalows set in a wild tropical garden with arguably one of the best views on Phu Quoc. Evolved from a family's holiday home, which still forms part of the property, the eco-minded lodge has a restaurant, daily yoga classes, beach barbecues, and activities available, including massages, kayaking, snorkeling, bicycle hire, cooking classes, and Vietnamese lessons.

Pros

  • Eco-minded
  • Great on-site restaurant
  • Activities available

Cons

  • Isolated
  • Limited dining options nearby
  • Nothing of interest that is walking distance

Binh Hoa Hotel 2

$ | 8 Le Hong Phong, Long Xuyen, Vietnam

The central location and attractive price are the main reasons to choose this hotel, which occupies two wings in a complex that also includes a wedding reception venue, a karaoke bar, and an interesting little outdoor café that specializes in pizza. The rooms are basic, but spacious and clean. However, the lack of English can make a stay here a challenge, especially if you run into one of the more unhelpful staff members.

Pros

  • <PRO>cheap, clean, and central</PRO>
  • <PRO>the café's playground is great for families with young kids</PRO>
  • <PRO>noise from the karoake bar subsides relatively early</PRO>

Cons

  • <CON>basic</CON>

Dong Anh Hotel

$ | 25 Tran Hung Dao, Ca Mau, Vietnam

Small and serviceable, with heavy wooden furniture, Vietnamese-style bathrooms, and a central location, this is nevertheless a generic hotel often used by Vietnamese businessmen (who tend to smoke a lot); do ask to see (and smell) a room before you check in.

Pros

  • Solid option if you don't mind a generic budget hotel
  • Within walking distance of local cafés and food stalls
  • Central location

Cons

  • Rooms can smell smoky

Happy Farm Tien Giang

$$ | 35 Ap Bo Xe, Xa Phu Thanh, Huyen Chau Thanh, My Tho, Vietnam

At this little setup 8 km (5 miles) from My Tho run by a lovely husband-and-wife team, Khoi and Oanh, you'll choose between simple wooden or solid bungalows, both with air-conditioning and an outdated en suite outdoor bathroom, but the big attraction here is the minihobby farm, which is home to chickens, ducks, rabbits, geese, dogs, and cats. Oanh supervises the kitchen, which turns out fabulous Vietnamese home cooking. It's very popular with Vietnamese families on weekends, when Khoi organizes a full itinerary of kids' activities, including tug-of-war, sack races, and fishing (the old-fashioned way, in the water with a bamboo basket).

Pros

  • Family-friendly
  • Farm animals
  • Vietnamese home-cooking

Cons

  • Rooster crowing
  • Not on the river with no attractions in the immediate area
  • No hot water

Long Xuyen Hotel

$ | 19 Nguyen Van Cung, Long Xuyen, Vietnam

In a central location, this hotel has clean, simple, and functional rooms that are actually pretty comfortable, with Vietnamese-style splash bathrooms. The furniture is solid-looking wood and the air-conditioning works well, which is all you can really ask for at this price. The hotel is behind the Co-Op Mart supermarket and the only two fast-food outlets in town, and a block from the Catholic church.

Pros

  • <PRO>convenient location</PRO>

Cons

  • <CON>interior is a tad dreary and the corridors are dim</CON>

The big selling point of this generic Vietnamese hotel is the large rooms, which has the mod-cons you'd expect, including air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, kettle, mini-refrigerator, a writing desk, and somewhat oddly laid-out bathrooms. In addition to the pool, there's a café, a karaoke floor, and a wedding reception venue.

River Hotel

$$ | Tran Hau, Ha Tien, Vietnam

Typical of the singular large hotel found in most provincial towns in Vietnam, this one boasts a prime location and generic city hotel rooms with little sitting areas and marble-tiled bathrooms, as well worn down facilities and a feeling that it is well past its glory days. Still, it's an easy pick and the receptionist try to be helpful. Outside of busy periods, you can confidently walk up without a booking and get a room.

Pros

  • A step up from the basic options in the Mekong Delta
  • Price has dropped
  • Terrific view from the river facing rooms

Most of the suitable hotels in Soc Trang lie outside its center, so it's worth considering Thien An, located in the outskirts of town, for its large swimming pool (complete with dolphin fountains) and clean modern rooms; the pricier pool view rooms have nicer finishings and glass door windows, allowing for lots of natural light.
