5 Best Hotels in Bangkok, Thailand

Background Illustration for Hotels

Bangkok offers a staggering range of lodging choices, and even some of the best rooms are affordable to travelers on a budget. The city has nearly 500 hotels and guesthouses, and the number is growing. In fact, competition has brought the prices down at many hotels; unfortunately, the service has suffered at some as a result of cutting corners to lower prices. Still, you'll feel more pampered here than in many other cities.

For first-class lodging, few cities in the world rival Bangkok. In recent years the Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Shangri-La, and a handful of others have been repeatedly rated among the best in the world, with newer players like the Sofitel So and St. Regis receiving major accolades. If there were a similar comparison of the world's boutique hotels, Bangkok's would be near the top, too. These high-end hotels are surprisingly affordable, with rates comparable to standard hotels in New York or London. Business hotels also have fine service, excellent restaurants, and amenities like health clubs and spas.

Wherever you stay, remember that prices fluctuate enormously, and that huge discounts are the order of the day. Internet discounts are widely available, and booking online can often save you up to several thousand baht. Always ask for a better price, even when you are checking in. Deals may be more difficult to come by during the high season from November through February, but during low season they're plentiful.

Hotels are concentrated in four areas: in Silom and Bang Rak (home to many of riverfront hotels); around Siam Square and along Phetchaburi Road in Pathumwan; along Sukhumvit Road, which has the greatest number of hotels and an abundance of restaurants and nightlife; and in the Chinatown and the Old City neighborhoods, which have a smaller number of properties, most of which are affordable. Backpackers often head to Khao San Road, also home to some newer, more upmarket guesthouses.

Mandarin Oriental

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

An architect was hired in 1887 to restore a riverside hotel post-fire, as it sat decaying on the jungled banks of the Chao Phraya River. Thailand was Siam in those days, and that saved structure would become the Mandarin Oriental and a great love story between a city and its most lavish hotel. A true respite of high-tea and fine dining, where you take a teak boat to the spa and a fleet of BMW 7 series wait to whisk you around Bangkok.

The Siam

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The Siam is truly Bangkok’s dreamiest villa escape, set across three full, riverbank acres, with only 38 suites. The architecture honors the Art Deco period––a towering white façade gives way to a lobby atrium dominated by a linear black water feature showcasing two-story tropical foliage––and the creative interiors are by famed, ground-breaking hotelier/designer, Bill Bensley. The property is a feast for the eyes, as you move around collections of antiquities. These range from 16th century archeology finds to framed, vintage Star Wars posters. The Siam proves that luxury doesn’t have to be so buttoned up.

$$$ | 721 Maitri Chit Rd., Bangkok, 10100, Thailand

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Welcome to a scene from Indiana Jones … or, perhaps, The Orient-Express. Welcome to a crumbling, old-world, spy-novel patina of a place; one that really sets a stage for immersing in Bangkok’s Chinatown.

In the 1800s, the building was a banking house, and the owners have restored well-loved hardwoods, faded plaster, and the iron staircase. They collected and added vintage sconces, glass-case antiquities, and taxidermy. The rooms make lovely use of teak and rattan, with antique shutters that open to dreamy vignettes of Bangkok’s bustling, colorful frenzy.

Siamotif Boutique Hotel

$$ | 79 Soi Watsrisudaram, Bangkok, 10700, Thailand

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

A sweet, polished homestay, it’s a dream to live for a few days inside a century-old, Thai river house. The home was passed down to current owner Anutra “Maii” Radabkij from her father, and after hiring artists to paint each bedroom in a different motif, Maii opened the hotel in 2015. Siamotif is located on the Bangkok Noi Canal, a tributary off the main river. Life around the hotel moves at a sleepier pace, and immersing yourself in Thai culture is as simple as sitting down to breakfast or borrowing one of the free bikes to explore the neighborhood.
