Bagan Lodge

$$ | Myat Lay Rd., Bagan, Myanmar
After a hot, dusty day of temple hopping, this resort’s pool and surrounding sun loungers will welcome you with open arms. So, too, will the buy-one-get-one happy hour from 4 to 7. Each room is its open bungalow with gleaming hardwood floor and is decorated in Colonial-influenced style, with a mix of wicker and dark wood furniture. The buffet breakfast is ample, with all manner of western breakfast foods and decent coffee. Staff are available and helpful, happy to arrange, pending availability, early check-in and late check-out. Because the hotel is slightly out of town, you’ll need a bike or vehicle (taxi/horse cart, moto) to get around; the hotel has electric bikes for hire.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Generous buffet breakfast
  • Free airport transfer

Cons

  • Very few restaurants within walking distance
  • Too far from town to walk back at night, so you’ll need to take a taxi or moto

Blue Bird

$$$ | 10 Naratheinkha, Bagan, Myanmar

Owned by a charming French-Burmese couple, and recently renovated, this lovely 24-room boutique hotel packs in a motley crew of travelers. Rooms are furnished simply but, after a long day of temple-hopping, are clean and serene. The bathrooms are oversize, with slate floors and rain-forest shower heads, and some include outdoor showers. Quirky touches include vintage medicine cabinets as safes. Borrow a board game from the front desk, or peruse the well-stocked DVD cabinet before retiring to your room and climbing inside the mosquito net.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Pool is just the right temperature
  • Owners on hand to help

Cons

  • Extremely thin walls
  • Outside noise
  • Dependence on the hotel's cab service

The Hotel at Tharabar Gate

$$$ | Bagan, Myanmar

Long been the place to stay in Bagan because it's a stone's throw from Ananda Temple and plenty of restaurants, this hotel demonstrates a common trend in Bagan---when demand for accommodations far outweighs supply. Visitors don't get great value for money. Rooms are large and clean but a little run down and the air-conditioning a bit weak. However, well-manicured verdant lawns and trees provides guests with a much-needed break from the dust and dirt of the temples. As is de rigueur, the spacious rooms here are an homage to, and of, wood, with lovely teak floors and traditional Burmese furniture. At night, stroll the lantern-lighted hotel grounds or take in dinner alfresco..

Pros

  • Walking distance to restaurants and temples
  • Partially shaded pool

Cons

  • Rooms and bathrooms need refurbishment
  • Food, other than breakfast, can be hit or miss

Ostello Bello Bagan

$ | Kayay St., Bagan, Myanmar
This is a fairly good option for New Bagan (where accommodations are priciest and book up quickly), with sun-filled twin, double, and triple rooms that are more like guesthouse rooms than those of your typical hostel. There are also dorms (mixed and single sex, four- and eight-bed). Rooms have simply, sturdy wooden furniture, comfortable beds, hardwood floors, and tidy bathrooms. Staff are friendly, as are the other guests, making this a smart choice for a solo traveler.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Air-conditioning and hot water
  • Ample breakfast

Cons

  • Rooms near the terrace can be noisy
  • A private room here can be nearly as expensive as a budget hotel

Thazin Garden Hotel

$$ | Thazin Rd., Bagan, Myanmar
Between the dreamy pool surrounded by flowers and the guest bungalows, each with its own veranda, you may just find yourself lazing here all day. There are a few restaurants within walking distance, and the hotel’s restaurant—with seating on the lawn, overlooking the garden with its own stupa—makes it popular with outside guests. Rooms are done up in standard Southeast Asian, but it’s lovely—dark carved wood beds, gleaming hardwood floors, cute flower petal art on the bed, and crisp white sheets with brightly colored accent pillows. Standard are large enough to accommodate two adults and a child or two.

Pros

  • Stupa on the grounds
  • Spacious rooms
  • Lovely gardens

Cons

  • Service can be lackluster
  • Thin walls
