Tipping

Tipping is not common in Japan. It's not necessary to tip taxi drivers, or at hair salons, barbershops, bars, or nightclubs. A chauffeur for a hired car usually receives a tip of ¥500 for a half-day excursion and ¥1,000 for a full-day trip. It's not customary to tip employees of hotels, even porters or cleaning staff, unless a special service has been rendered. You can tip servers in a traditional ryokan as meals are served in your room . Plan to tip ¥1,000 per day's stay.
