Explore Gorongosa, Gorongosa National Park

$$$ | Gorongosa National Park, Beira, Mozambique Fodor's Choice

This very rustic tented camp on the banks of the Mussicadzi River deep in the wilderness is not for the fainthearted, but it provides an extraordinary, close-to-nature experience. You are surrounded by wild Africa, so if you're scared of things that go bump in the night, creepy crawlies, or animals roaring nearby, opt for Girassol Lodge. Four well-spaced eco-friendly, roomy tents are equipped with solar powered lights, torches, a desk, and a bathroom under the stars with a bucket shower. Food is basic but tasty and the cook even manages to provide afternoon tea with cake. Guided walks are a highlight with super-knowledgeable and patient guides.

Pros

  • You'll be hard pressed to find a more authentic African wilderness experience

Cons

  • Pricey for what amounts to a camping experience, but worth it

Girassol Lodge, Gorongosa National Park

$$ | Gorongosa National Park, Gorongosa, Mozambique Fodor's Choice

Don't expect five-star luxury at this historic camp in the middle of the park, but the chalets and bungalows are clean and comfortable and well-spaced from one another. Each has a covered veranda from where you can watch the warthogs and vervet monkeys play. There's a deluxe villa, however, if you do want to be extra comfortable. All the ensuite rondavels (round huts) have high thatch ceilings for ventilation, air conditioning, mini fridges, hairdryers, safe, and tea and coffee making facilities. Two of the standard bungalows have inter-connecting rooms, perfect for families or close friends. The restaurant serves delicious Mocambiqan food, and there's a spa and a pool (not always spotless because of wind and dust). A hike to the mountain waterfall is a must plus a trip to the Vinho community. Note: U.S currency notes must date 2008 or later.

Pros

  • Deep, in-the-bush experience
  • Excellent guides
  • Good W-Fi coverage

Cons

  • Restaurant service can be slow
  • Elephants here are often aggressive
