Sahara Stars Camp

$$$ | Ras El Erg Chebbi, 52202, Morocco Fodor's Choice

True to its name, this new camp in the dunes offers a stunning, unimpeded view of the stars, enjoyed from luxurious tents with hot power showers, plush beds, elegant decor, and lovely touches like flowers scattered on the bed and pom-pommed hats to guard against the sun. The camp prides itself on its mix of modern and traditional, blending traditional elements like an Amazigh party around the campfire with less cliché touches like cold, homemade lemonade on arrival (rather than the ubiquitous mint tea) and fusion cuisine, which, for many guests, is a welcome break from tagine. Prices include camel or buggy ride in, dinner, bed and breakfast, and party around the campfire.

You can only reach this camp by 4x4 or camel with the owners. They will collect and guide you here.

Pros

  • Luxury tents
  • They can organize several activities
  • A secluded location

Cons

  • Customer service can be hit or miss
  • Quite pricey
  • Only accessible by camel or quad

Tiziri Camp

$$ | Merzouga 52202, Tinerhir, Morocco Fodor's Choice

Comprised of just eight tents, this intimate eco-friendly camp is solar-powered and offers vegan-friendly dining options (which can be difficult to find in these parts). The staff are all from local families and welcome any questions that curious guests may have about life in the desert. Come evening, don't be surprised if drinks and music around the fire turn into a full-blown dance party under the stars. Thanks to its small size, Tiziri is an easy place to feel at home and make friends.

Pros

  • Intimate feel
  • Live music by the fire every night
  • Solar-powered and eco-friendly

Cons

  • Check-in process can be slow
  • Must meet at a pickup point rather than the property
  • Rather expensive for the area
