The Return of the Son of Food and Drink...on the left is a jar of the aforementioned citrus jam made on site @Chateau Gaillard in Amboise. The palace/castle there is the most Italianate chateau of the Loire.

This is Frederic, the chef-owner of l'ecole Gourmande restaurant in Montresor. He also writes cookbooks. He was a one-person show the day that we had lunch there in that old schoolroom. His beetrave appetizer was one of the best ever--bravo! Great porc Provencal and rhubarb crumble dessert. *Funny coincidence : we did not realize it during the meal, but the engaging Brit-born Tourism Office rep (Rebecca) whom we hoped to later meet for the first time, turned out to be dining right next to us!

The downtown core is where travelers want to spend time for reasons of churches, medieval buildings and markets. The Luftwaffe bombed parts of central Tours and those areas were rebuilt starting in 1966. The city's shiny new tram-streetcar runs N-S straight down the path of the worst wartime damage--rue Nationale/ave Grammont. Excellent shopping now awaits visitors on those two above lively streets. *Shown here is one of the streets running just off of that tramway, near Basilique St. Martin.

About the only sound by the river was the bees. Then a group of LOUD Mallard ducks arrived. A local mom and her toddler daughter arrived to view the ducks then walked away. We caught up with them to hand over the doll that the kid had dropped.

History majors could tell you the tale of the doomed young medieval lovers Tristan and Iseult. This book sat beside a private library including old Asterix books plus Tin Tin and more.

Here, history literally surrounds the visitor. Dig that arrow gone right through the centaur trying to escape with the lady.

Tours had its fair share of street art. Hard to tell whether ANTIFA was part of the artist's original design or if that slogan was added afterwards by either activists or third parties...

Cutesy jardin decor by the boulangerie that claims to have once invented macarons. The nearby village of Cormery takes issue with that claim as it purports to have once been the real inventors.

It would be impossible not to mention la guerre in any meaningful TR about this area. There once existed a kind of Underground Railroad organization that at great risk, aided in efforts to defeat the Nazis.

As elsewhere, visitors to France have itinerary decisions to make: how much time spent in big cities versus the countryside?

I especially admire the maquis and their collaborators. Those interested in seeing just how many 'grey' areas there were during WWII could view the fantastic French TV series 'Un Village Francais'.
Next: *Chateau Gaillard, surely one of the best-kept secrets in the Loire valley.

Unexpected added-value is found in Montresor and who knew? On rue Marche in the former Carders Hall (1750 wool market), one may visit the free 'Gemmail' exhibit. The art is a cousin stained-glass and is illuminated from behind. Both Cézanne and also Picasso once experimented in this rare and colorful art form. *Merci to JP Sala-Malherbe for donating this welcome bit of color underneath timber frames and mansard roof.

Twelve years prior, hero pilot Janor disappointed expectant local crowds gathered in the meadows when his monoplane would not function til the day after they'd all gone home! Across both of our visits, there were less than ten tourists at Montresor. All of them were except one Belgian couple. I'm always a bit leery of reporting such a statistic, almost arrogant in its feel, after all we are bien sur tourists ourselves and are not in the slightest bit anti-social.

Onto Montresor. The French countryside is not to be missed. Fields, farms and birds. One might sight: ash herons, godwits, plovers, cormorants, swans, terns, stonechats, coots plus all manner of songbird. Understand, I would not be able to ID many of those birds but simply want to inform birdwatchers and like that.

How we wish that our Nikons had adequately captured one particular private garden. The owner had landscaped her yard to form an attractive 'L' shape. There were tiered sections, a wide variety of trees and flowers plus a magnificent historic stone wall across which spread the long, thick branch belonging to ancient vine. The owner went for a walk while we were there and we came this close to congratulating her. The sole image we were satisfied with was this rare rose. Oh its fragrance!

Clos de Luce is the famed Amboise museum dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. Given that it was the Toussaint school break, one noticed a number of families including grandparents, taking kids to these kinds of attractions. There are paintings, sculptures, mechanical items, architecture both within and without, plus compelling landscape replete with bridges plural and attractive streams.

This salmon tart dish was A+ awesome (that word). We bought a large slice of it from the already-mentioned Tours-based fishmonger at the weekly Loches market. That day, the village was covered in a deep fog.
*Next we will complete this Food section with a simple list of our most-recommended.

The Nicolas Leger pastry shop in Tours is located kitty corner to the permanent Les Halles market. Their version of the Paris-Brest pastry (so-named for the inaugural bicycle race linking the two places) shown here is off-the-charts incredible. We fantasized about staging a 3am break-in to steal many more.
