Carabinero (giant red shrimp); this seemed skimpy as compared to those I devoured at ANTONIO, but the meat was tasty and gorgeously sweet and I sopped up everything inside the shell--eating with my hands, as I usually do with shrimp.

This artichoke was braised and stuffed with mojada, which I found very salty.  I inquired about the grated cheese served on top, which added more salt.  The server told me is was Parmesan but I am fairly sure that it was not..it was too white, and too salty.  Overall this was probably the least satisfying of many artichokes I had while in the area...

Sashimi of ventresca, belly of tuna. a personal favorite.
But you can see that there are more obvious threads of white fat running through t his piece....compare to the sashimi at EL CAMPERO.  Nothing can touch the latter.

This is an assortment of raw and mostly raw tuna cuts:  From left:  Tuna tartar; tuna tatami (cooked on the outer edges); Sashimi de ventresca; parpetana, which was described to me as the palate, or the part of the tuna behind the throat....in any case it is delicious.  This is always cut much thinner than the belly (ventresca)

This was the delicious starter offered to all diners: a pate of mixed fish and seafood.  Light and delicious..I could have a double portion with a salad to complete an excellent lunch!  But there was more to come!

EL ALFEREZ, Beach of El Palmar, about 12 minutes by car from Vejer.  The restaurant faces the beach road, with the dunes and wide, windswept beach beyond. Many surfers were out the day I ate here in mid-March.

How didi this one sneak in....it's from today....mercado de Barbate.....those 2 containers of manteca colora---they are no longer on display with the home-made croquettes--they are tucked away in my suitcase, enclosed in some Zip-Locs to prevent yet another disaster (don't even ask!!)
