Yes, I agree. It's sad, but thanks for keeping track of this. Even so, this budget is calculated at $1.45 USD to Euro, so it already has to be adjusted upwards.
Regarding the $200 per person for tourism costs, I think it's quite possible the average person will want to spend more. That only allows about $15 USD per person per day (10 Euros), but just consider the cost of admission to the Uffizi plus an audiophone.
I think the accommodation costs for 2* travelers are accurate, but without much sacrifice you might be able to do convents/1*/special bargains/apartments and get the costs down to 80 Euros (say $125USD) per day, so that would be about $1625 USD for the 13 days.

OUCH! I have looked at my previous Italian trips, and while I don't really look at stars when booking, I would quantify my stays to be at 3* establishments. My total expenses previously have been $2000 for 8 nights, inclusive of plane tickets for both my mother and me.
I know that when I tried to plan a last minute trip to Rome in January, I was looking at a $1000 price tag, airfare and hotel for 4 nights. YIKES! Needless to say, that trip never happened. I may have to choose a fingertip season instead of a shoulder season!

Good thread, and thank you for the link to the budget site.
I see that the airfare is very high for flights from the US to Italy.
Have you considered flying into another where the airfare may not be as high, and then catching another flight into Italy.
Our flight to Dublin from Detroit is $600 a piece, then our flight on Aer Lingus to Venice is $80 a piece.
I don't know how schedules would work out (flights) but since we are in Ireland 9 days before our 9 in Italy, it may be an option?????
