I will travel in Florence & Rome with my parents, mother-in-law (all in 70's), my son (age 5) in February 2006. Is hiring a private driver guide from Florence to Rome a good choice considering the weather in February?
If possible, leave Florence at early morning then stop at Siena and other sites, then arrive at Rome in one day. Has anyone done that before?

Y - I would think cost would be the main issue here rather than weather.
A private driver with stops en route would be in the range € 350-450. (Florence-Rome by train would cost less than half that). Your choice![Imported](https://www.fodors.com/community/images/smilies/imported/smiley.gif)
Hope this helps ...

Hi Yi,
The family fare (2 adult, 1 child) for 2cl on the ES* is 74E.
The fare for 2 adults is 58E
Total 132E.
See www.trenitalia.com for train schedules, prices and tickets.

It is a long day. What do you do with your luggage? I would visit Siena as a daytrip from Florence.
You can take the SITA bus to Siena, and the Sena bus to Rome.
See http://www.sitabus.it

Thanks for your reply!
My husband favors hiring a private driver guide. He thinks difficult to take a train with 3 elders and 1 kid.
Besides, he wants to let my father( first time to Italy) see some cities in Tuscany.
What I concern is the cold weather and short daytime. € 350-450---you mean one day driver guide from Florence to Rome?

My husband & me have visited Siena 2 times and don't want to do a daytrip. I think we can put our luggages in the van by the private driver.
I will check the train web and discuss with my husband. Thanks!

Y - A straight transfer without stops would normally be about € 300-350 for that kind of distance.
My guess is that it would be closer to € 450 if you want to add one or two stops en route.
Hope this helps ...

Hi yi,
>...[DH] wants to let my father( first time to Italy) see some cities in Tuscany. ...have visited Siena 2 times and don't want to do a daytrip.<
I think that you are going to have to spring for a van and a driver.

...do a search on google with this: IITT
You will find the web site for ITALY INDEPENDENT TRAVEL TEAM. Tell Paolo that I sent you. I would expect 300 to 400E.
Their website is http://www.masternet.it/home/IITT/home.htm
Others have also recommended www.limoservicerome.com
Hope this helps.

Also check the rates from Luca Garapa at Hillsandroads.com. We used him for several day trips in and around Florence. He just bought a new minivan, and while I'm not sure if he would be willing to drive Florence-Rome, it is the off-season, so you might try him. We found that his rates were considerably lower than other drivers that we contacted, and we really enjoyed his company! Good luck!

I also recommend Luca. He does a great job. I'm sure he would go to Rome. There might be an extra charge to his hourly rates due to the price of gas and his having to return to Siena, where he lives, but his prices are very reasonable.
