Bar...e (Venice)
As Holland America Line’s second of four ships in the Vista class, Oosterdam was named for the Eastern compass point and christened in the Netherlands in July 2003. To pay homage to the line’s long history of circumnavigating the globe—which began in 1873 and now has 11 ships in its fleet offering 500 cruises to more than 98 countries and territories around the world—Oosterdam’s atrium features a mesmerizing Waterford-crystal globe.Read More
The Oosterdam was refurbished in March 2022, which included updates to the accessibility rooms, the pool, Kids Club, Medical Center, Sports Club, and Rolling Stone Lounge. Another refurbishment is planned for 2025, though specific details are not yet available.
Oosterdam splits her time mainly between Europe in the summers (where she runs sailings in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean Seas) and South America and Antarctica in the winters. Repositioning cruises are available in April and November each year.
Holland America Line is known for focusing on passenger comfort at an affordable price point, and truly caters to passengers of all types, from honeymooners and young families to retirees and multi-generational groups.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
What to expect on board
Staterooms & Cabins
Almost everyone on board will have a room with a view, as 85 percent of all Vista-class accommodations have an ocean view (of the 982 cabins, only 160 are interior), and almost 80% of those also feature a spacious furnished private balcony. Each cabin has adequate closet and drawer/shelf storage, as well as bathroom shelves, though it is lacking in some of the more-creative and space-saving storage solutions newer ships offer.
Oosterdam has 60 impressive Neptune Suite cabins, each with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private verandah, a large sitting area, king-size bed with plush Euro-top mattress, dual sink vanity, full-size whirlpool bath and shower, plus an additional shower stall. Guests in these suites have exclusive access to the Neptune Lounge, a private concierge and other complimentary services like laundry, pre-dinner hors d’oeuvres served in-suite, and in-suite high tea upon request. There are also 100 Signature Suites, featuring a spacious sitting area with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private balcony, and two enormous Pinnacle Suites at 1,150 square feet each.
All staterooms and suites are appointed with Euro-top mattresses, massage shower heads, hair dryers and makeup mirrors, fresh fruit upon request, a safe, mini fridge, and flat-panel TVs. Bathroom extras include Egyptian cotton towels, Elemis Aromapure bath products, plus two deluxe bathrobes to use during the cruise.
The Oosterdam has 28 accessible staterooms, broken down into three categories:
– Fully Accessible: Designed for use by guests with highly limited or no mobility who require regular use of a wheelchair, scooter, or other similar assistive devices.
– Fully Accessible Single Side Approach: Designed for use by guests who require regular use of a wheelchair, scooter, or other similar assistive devices, these rooms provide accessible bathrooms along with an accessible route and clear floor space on only one side of the bed in a stateroom.
– Ambulatory Accessible: Designed for use by guests with mobility disabilities who do not require the regular use of a wheelchair, scooter, or other similar assistive devices.
Fully accessible and fully accessible single side approach bathrooms in guest staterooms will provide one of three types of bathing facilities: roll-in shower, transfer shower, or accessible bathtub.
Food & Drink
The formal dining room offers a rotating menu and open seating breakfast and lunch, with a choice at dinner between two assigned seatings or open seating. The Pinnacle Grill steakhouse (reservation required, cover charge) serves lunch and dinner. A casual Lido Market restaurant serves buffet breakfast and lunch; at dinner the Lido offers a combination buffet/table service with entrées from both the Lido and main dining room menus, and Italian fare is served in the adjacent Canaletto Restaurant (reservation required, cover charge). Poolside lunch at Dive In at the Terrace Grill includes hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings.
The Crow’s Nest Explorations Café offers extra-charge specialty coffees and free pastries. Daily afternoon tea service is elevated to Royal Dutch High Tea once per cruise. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres are served by waiters during cocktail hour, hand-dipped chocolates are offered after dinner in the Explorer’s Lounge, and a late-night buffet and chocolate extravaganza is served in the Lido restaurant during every cruise. Room service is available 24 hours.
You can order drinks at any of the dining venues, or enjoy them at one of many onboard bars and lounges, including:
– Crow’s Nest, which offers a selection of drinks paired with a panoramic view at the top of the ship on deck 10.
– Ocean Bar, a popular hangout at the top of the atrium with ample seating for semi-private gatherings with your travel companions.
– Gallery Bar, which exudes sophistication thanks to being surrounded by whimsical and refined artwork.
– Billboard Onboard is the place to be if you’d like to sing and play along with trivia questions while sipping a cocktail.
– Rolling Stone Lounge, which features a 7-piece band playing live music ranging from rock to country.
– Sea View Bar and Lido Bar, two options on the Lido deck that are perfect for quenching your thirst poolside.
Holland America offers a la carte alcoholic beverages, sodas, and juices, or you can choose from one of four beverage packages: Coca-Cola (unlimited non-alcoholic drinks for $8/person per day), Quench (premium coffees, sodas, juices, bottled water and mocktails for $17.95/person per day), Signature Beverage Package (beers, sprits, cocktails and wines under $11/each for $54.95/person per day), Elite Beverage Package (premium spirits, cocktails and wines under $15/each for $59.99/person per day).
Entertainment
Before dinner, the Ocean Bar and Crow’s Nest are popular spots where servers pass through with appetizers. Later in the evening, those bars become quiet spots for drinks and conversation. For livelier action, head to Rolling Stone Lounge, which features live music six nights a week powered by Rolling Stone’s highly regarded “best of” lists including rock, R&B, and pop. Sing along with two pianists and test your music trivia of 60 years of chart toppers at Billboard Onboard. On the Main Stage, a troupe of singers and dancers entertain guests with production shows, and some evenings you can also find comedians and other live performers in this space.
Spa & Fitness
The Greenhouse Spa treatments include a variety of massages, body wraps, and facials, as well as acupuncture and tooth-whitening services. A hydrotherapy pool and thermal suite with heated ceramic lounges for relaxation and dry sauna and steam rooms are free to use when a spa appointment is booked and available for a fee to all other passengers.
The Fitness Center is equipped with cardio and weight machines and indoor cycling and Pilates are available (some classes may have a nominal fee). Guests will find basketball and volleyball courts on deck, along with pickleball courts (and free beginner’s lessons).
Key cruising tips
Health & Safety
There is no pre-cruise medical testing requirement. Oosterdam has an experienced team of doctors and nurses on board to manage a broad range of medical conditions and its medical center is fully equipped with testing and treatment capabilities if needed. Staterooms and public areas are frequently sanitized with medical grade disinfectant and the ship has upgraded air filtration systems. The public health and medical protocols for preventing and treating Acute Respiratory Illness (including Covid) onboard Oosterdam are in line with guidance provided by the CDC.
Dress Code
Onboard, guests can relax in casual attire during the day (shorts and tasteful T-shirts are acceptable even in the dining room). At dinner, dress codes will vary daily, among the following:
Smart Casual: Skirts/dresses, slacks, and blouses for ladies; Slacks and collared shirts for men.
Dressy: Evening gowns and cocktail dresses for women; tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits with a tie for men.
Most 7-night cruises will have two dressy nights, and longer cruises will have additional dressy nights.
Junior Cruisers
Oosterdam has a Kids Club for youth, which helps keep kids and teens ages 3-17 entertained in a safe environment with supervision by full-time, professionally trained staff. Kids and teens can join their peers (broken down into age-appropriate groupings: 3-6, 7-12, 13-17) for arts and crafts, sports challenges, video game competitions and gaming tournaments, scavenger hunts, and themed parties. Note: Kids Club is not offered on cruises of 25-days or longer.
Service
Holland American Line features a 2:1 passenger to crew ratio, which means someone is always nearby to help or provide service. Service aboard the Oosterdam is consistently prompt and courteous, with plenty of smiling faces and friendly greetings. Your cabin stewards and restaurant staff will get to know your name and preferences, doing their best to anticipate your needs.
Tipping
In order to recognize the many team members throughout our fleet who contribute to the guest experience, Holland American Line adds a crew appreciation amount to your onboard account daily: $17 per guest per day for non-suite staterooms and $19 per guest per day for suite guests.
Additionally, an 18% service charge is automatically applied to all beverage purchases, bar retail items, specialty restaurant cover charges, all for-purchase a la carte menu items, and all Spa & Salon services.
