Zion, Capital Reef, Moab - Suggestions for Hikes and "Must See"

Author: Brandessa

Message: Will be leaving for our Southern Utah trip at the end of the week. We've been there once before in August several years ago.

The final itinerary is 3 days at Zion, 2 days Capital Reef, and 3 days in Moab. We will not be stopping at Bryce this trip; but spending the additional time at Capital Reef and Moab.

I am interested in suggestions of non strenuous hikes and "be sure not to miss" areas. After reading the board, I have noted the following "easier" hikes:
Zion - Narrows (will do again this trip)
Capital Reef - Grand Wash and Capital Gorge
Arches - Delicate Arch (again) and Park Avenue
Canyonlands - Mesa Arch

At Capitol Reef, I suggest Hickman Bridge. If you have some energy left, the Cassidy Arch extension off of the Grand Wash Trail is a good one.

If you check out the details on the official web site, you will see quite a few more suggestions.

Brandessa,

You'll find a description of hikes that I took a few weeks ago at http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...t=0&dirtyBit=1

The only hike of those mentioned that is definitely more strenuous than the Delicate Arch hike is the Syncline Loop hike. The hike from Elephant Hill to Chestler Park will be about as strenuous as Delicate Arch but in a different way; whereas Delicate Arch requires the long, gradual uphill climb, the Elephant Hill has shorter, steeper climbs.

As for Mesa Arch, it's not really a hike. It's a very short walk, no different in that regard than most of the short walks to the roadside arches in Arches NP.

If you like seeing arches and the huge fins up close and from all angles, I recommend that you not miss the Devil's Garden trail in Arches NP.

Sorry that the link I provided is the wrong one. For some reason, I can't copy the correct link. So, look for my post titled, Hiking Near Moab, if you haven't already seen it.

In Zion you might consider Lower and Middle Emerald Pools. If you can do Delicate Arch this is a lot easier Also Weeping Rock is fun and short.

In Capitol Reef Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge are my favorites and they are pretty level.

In Arches you might consider Landscape Arch.

In Canyonlands, Mesa Arch is more a short walk and a definite must see. The hike at Grandview is level and very scenic. They were just upgrading the walk with stones when we did this hike a few years ago.

While in Canyonlands, just make sure you stop at Green River Overlook...WOW...one of my favorites!

At Arches, don't miss the guided hike through Firey Furnace. Need to get tickets at the Visitor's Center. Not hard but you'll use every part of your body in some places. In Canyonlands, Island In The Sky district, hike out to the end and view 'Island In The Sky' in all it's glory. Enjoy!! PS: Don't miss Dead Horse Point State Park on the road out to Island In The Sky.

Utahtea,

Considering that you like the Green River Overlook, be sure to drop into Tom Till's photography gallery the next time you're in Moab. A few weeks ago he was displaying a gorgeous photograph of the overlook that is about 50" X 60", very large!!! Or look for it online or in one of his books.

In Canyonlands Island in the Sky, try Whate Rock. Fun, short andgreat views.

Note: Firey Furnace does require squeezing through some narrow spots and jumping across small gaps between rocks. If this bothers you, think twice about this one.

Yes, Utahtea, that one. Seeing it in a really large print is mesmerizing.
