Your fav short vacation getaway in summer in CA?
Looking for a few days getaway this summer in CA. We live in So Cal. I like all of CA, really. We want to go as a family, for a few days between baseball and football and other obligations. Would not get as much as a week. Two children are 19 and 15. Would be nice to have some "cool" things to do nearby. Not Disneyland, we did that two years ago. Not super expensive. Beach is OK, but can be real expensive in the summer. Any comments on this question?

Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead
Tehachapi - Rankin Guest Ranch
Whitewater rafting on the Kern River near Kernville/Lake Isabella
Yosemite NP/Bass Lake
Sequoia NP or Kings Canyon NP
Bishop/Mammoth/Bodie Ghost Town
Ojai/Lake Casitas
Even though you're not at the beach, you can still get wet in some beautiful lakes, rivers and streams.

Mission Beach in San Diego. You can find relatively reasonable lodging and massive stuff to do, particularly for that age group. My teenage boys loved our visits to Mission Beach and one even applied to UCSD.
I would also recommend the northwest corner of CA, but you have too short of a trip planned. Trees of Mystery, Oregon Caves and Albany Festival make for a great trip sometime when you have a week.

Well, we love Mission Beach too, but to rent a place there is about $3000 a week now. And hotel rooms are around $350, if you want to be in Mission Beach. It all goes sky high July and August and everything is so crowded. Thought we would avoid that scene this year, even though our kids would LOVE to stay there...

On the other hand, if you stay in one of the cheap chain hotels; Days Inn, Super8, EconLodge, the prices are MUCH cheaper. We just stayed near the Sports Arena. Granted, it was not as nice as staying on the beach or the bay, but if you have a car, who cares? You'll save a bundle.
