Where to go in Ohio or Nearby States

I will be in Cincinnati for a week at a conference in late July 2017 and was looking for something fun to do for a few days after either in another part of Ohio, neighboring states or Canada. I prefer not to go further west than Chicago and I don't want to go south. I'm open to going north or west. I will be traveling alone and have flexibility on any recommendations you have for things to do or lodging. I'm also open to the train, flying or a driving.

Your train choices from Cincinnati are the Cardinal to Chicago leaving about 1:40AM on July 1 (9 hours) or the eastbound Cardinal to Washington DC on August 2 after 3 AM (15+ hours). You could also get off before Washington at White Sulphur Springs West Virginia. The Greenbrier is a great hotel if you can afford it.
If you choose to go to Chicago, you can take another train (Lake Shore Limited to Buffalo and then go to see Niagara Falls.
You will discover that the Cincinnati airport is in northern Kentucky.
