Well, I've never seen anybody chasing a grizzly (I've never seen a grizzly either) but I HAVE seen people in canoes getting within a foot or two of a huge alligator laying on the bank, just so they can get a good picture. I've also seen people let their small children out of the car to chase the wild boars on the side of the road. (Both gators and wild boars are extremely dangerous, unpredictable, and easily annoyed, for anybody who didn't realize that.)

People are stupid, especially when it comes to wildlife. So it wouldn't surprise me at all to see somebody chasing a grizzly. Well, it would surprise me a little because I still can't believe people can be so dumb.

John,

Actually black bears are more dangerous than grizzlies. All a grizzly is really interested in doing is eat berries and prepare for winter.

Of course, they also want to protect their young and don't like to be surprised.

Black bears may view you as a meal and may attack you as such.

That's why they tell you that if charged by a grizzly you should lie down on your stomach with you backpack over your head and play dead. But with a black bear they tell you to fight back.

In general a grizzly is going to be bigger with much bigger claws so they can do a lot of damage if they feel threatened.

Generally, both types are shy and want to mind their own business.

John,

The grizzly bears were just moving on and people were following after them. It's crazy I know!

A few years ago in Denali we saw tourists running after a grizzly bear and her cub. They were close enough that a park ranger was shouting on a loud speaker, "Get away from the bear!"

I don't know if the tourists were trying to photograph the bears or pet them.
