Yellowstone weather

I am looking at a visit to Yellowstone in the Spring or Fall. I would rather not have snow, but don't mind if there is some. But I do want to avoid the time when a heavy snowfall would be likely.

What dates should be avoided?

From what I have heard, the "winter" 6 months. Northern part of Park has less snowfall than Southern (according to people I spoke with 2 weeks ago when we visited). Many of the animals migrate to northern part in winter because of this. North entrance is only one open to car traffic in winter.

To put temperatures in perspective, when we were there end of August, on 2 mornings when I went out for morning drive, I could have used ice scraper for frost on windshield of car - although it did warm up to 70s later in the day.

If you are trying to avoid snow in Spring or Fall, I'd recommend a trip in September. Generally, September is still warm although we've had blizzards in September so no guarantees! If you push to October, there is a much increased chance of a cold weather/snow. In the spring, you could try late May (there may be mud/snow on the ground but it is generally starting to warm with wildflowers starting to appear).

Thanks, both of you.

I wasn't trying to avoid snow on th e ground, but to avoid so much snow that that driving is a problem.

We have visited Yellowstone twice and always in the second half of September. Wonderful weather. Paul
