Good news - you are over estimating. We were there about two weeks ago and I believe gas was in the $2.45 - $2.65 range. Have a great trip.

We were at Yellowstone at the end of June. We paid $2.40 for gas at the Fishing Bridge village. We actaully paid more for gas in Western CO than at YNP! We stayed at Canyon Campground. Traffic had it's moments. Nothing compared to East Coast city traffic. Speed limits are low - about 25 mph in the park. The worst was in the Hayden Valley area in the evening/dusk. There is a massive heard of Bison that were responsible for the slowdown. Come to think of it, it was the Bison that caused traffic trouble in the Firehole Lake Dr area too. Just be alert because people just stop in the road & even abandon their vehicles

We stayed at the Old Faithful Inn and the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. I think we covered most of the areas we wanted to visit, but we were on the go all day. Suprisingly, the traffic was not bad. Most of the congestion seemed to be concentrated around Old Faithful and Mammoth in the middle of the day. As mom2boys mentioned, be prepared for sudden stops as traffic jams are the norm if there is any wildlife on the side of the road. The speed limits are 45 mph, but use caution, especially if you are driving at night. Bring a good mosquito repellant! I have never been bit so much in my life and that was after spraying with DEET. We also brought a campstove and ate lunch & dinner at picnic areas several times. The food in the park is mediocre at best.
