Would you rather have a 2nd house by the ocean or in the mountains?

GoTravel -- if you read the rest of ,my post, you'd see that the first sentence was a major typo. I meant to says that I have to DISAGREE that beach people are lazy!
And Hazel, a few marketing campaigns from tourism bureaus do not "prove" that the beach is less active than the mountains. It is very easy to be a sloth in either location, and very easy to be active in either location. I'll put it this way -- all the "beach bums" I know are in far better shape than the mountain "adventurers." Maybe because they spend their vacations surfing, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. Or maybe, like GoTravel said, it's just because they know they can't hide under a parka!

We had a similar decision about 30 years ago. I think it's a very interesting question, because the two environments are vastly different. I wonder how the demographics and psychographics compare between the two. We've lived in both places, and loved each for different reasons.
P.S. Bugs in the mountains? Not in many places in the Rockies. I always get freaked out about the bugs near the ocean-- i.e. cockroaches in Hawaii and Florida?

Haha...yes and no. This is a fun question -- where would you go if you had extra money to spend on a second home? The problem is that one poster came in with the blanket statement, "Active people like mountains, non-active people like beaches." That's insulting to anyone who enjoys the beach (and doesn't fancy themselves a beached whale), and that why several posters, myself included, have been defensive.

Exactly. What about people who walk or run along the beach, beach sports, water sports...oh and of course, good old swimming.

We have a seasonal beach cottage on Capecod, Ma. and are about to spring for a mountaintop plot in S. Carolina.
Love the New England coast but not in the winter - burrr.
So to answer the question - both

Ocean!!!!
A house on the ocean is my lifelong dream, it was my mom's too, and she just achieved it last year, so now I can live vicariously through her until I get my beach house, and I will, someday.

I think my screen name gives my answer away!!
We checked into island property and it isn't a logical second home when we can't spend much time there and traveling from OKC is so inconvenient to go to the islands but definitely worth the effort.
Our second home, so to speak, is in Santa Fe/Tesuque area. We rent the same place about every two months. So it feels like our home and someone else gets to pay the management fees and taxes. And, we're not tied down to it but we seem to find our way back there quite often.

The ocean for sure, and probably Hawaii. I would want the outdoor life during the time spent there. I used to live in the Bay Area and even after 30 years of living in Reno, I still miss the ocean. If I drive down, I just love it when I hit Vallejo..it's the first spot where I can smell the ocean and I'm always thrilled.
