Well, I visited San Francisco on business last year from Chicago and loved it so much that I returned home and requested a transfer immediately. The blend of amazing weather and countless culutral amenities reeled me in. Not to mention the natural beauty of the bay and hills-Im all the happier for it-

L.A. without a doubt was my biggest disappointment (esp. Hollywood, where was all the glamour i had seen on TV since I was a child?) Sprawling, crowded, and highways are a mess. I love going to California, but I don't care if I ever go back. My most pleasant suprise was Seattle. LOVED IT!! The city itself was fantistic (Pike Market Place was a wnderful suprise all in itself) plus you have some of the most wonderful natural attractions that are great day trips. I can't wait to go back!!!

I'd have to agree with the person that posted right before/above me about Hollywood. I went there years ago and loved it. Last summer went there and it was just a waste of time. Big dissapointment. A lot of poverty everywhere believe it or not.
I was surprised with Los Angeles. I had always heard it was so horrible-the smog and the traffic...and gosh the drivers! But I have been there so many times now and can't wait to go back! All the places around it are just wonderful: Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu...Beverly Hills...its all great!

My biggest disappointment was Myrtle Beach. (I know, I know, it's not a major U.S. city but...) We went for the golf but I didn't expect 20 miles of miniature golf courses (literally hundreds...who supports all these mini courses?) and all you can eat calabash seafood...this place is a cultural vacumn!
Loved:
Savannah
Charleston
How could you not like Boston! Fabulous!
San Francisco...ditto!
I was born and raised in So. Ca. and I can understand why some people would be turned off...there is a lot of traffic, smog (but we have improved!)and it is vast but I can't imagine living anywhere else. It's home...

Pleasant surprise? Detroit, MI. Why? My only other visit to Detroit was in the turbulent 60s (1967 to be exact) when race riots broke out and the city was in complete chaos and destruction. I returned a few years ago and was quite surprised by the friendly people and rebuilt city. The people of Detroit make the city special!
Disappointed? Lexington, Kentucky. The city sits amidst alot of natural beauty, but it bored me. Not much to do there.

My worst vacation was at a place I love-Topsail Island, NC. My wife had been in Seattle for a 4-month temporary work detail for EPA and I had not seen her for almost two months so we had hoped to have good weather for our reaquaintance. Except for the first and last full day there, it rained without much relief even though it was June 1995. Furthermore, I would be seeing some places on the Island for the last time as a hurricane would destroy them by the time I returned. Lastly, I found out two months ago from my wife that, being bored, without a car and needing a little attention, she dated a man five or six times, ending the "platonic" fling only a week before she flew home to me because this beaux was wanting to have sex with her. This tidbit about her Seattle assignment almost ended our marriage, one which has enjoyed three children and lots of good times since 1995. So the Topsail vacation of 1995, and in fact the year 1995, is probably the worst I've ever had.

Tough luck. With the advent of birth control, radical feminism, the respectablitlity of divorce and raising single families and the demasculinization of the workplace, women are shutting the door on men more and more often. Women are slutting up and society is in decline. Frankly, I think women only want men for sex and nothing more.

Another vote for Dallas. Was there on business at the Hyatt downtown for a week. After the JFK museum there was nothing interesting to see. Walked into middle of downtown during the middle of a business day and it was eerily deserted, and nothing to do or see. Without a car could not venture much past downtown. All in all it was a very unremarkable city. Definitely would not go there on personal time
