Worried about Broadway
Hi, all
We are on our fourth day on the Olympic Penninsula and are having a grand time. Will post a trip report upon our return.
We are booked for the Silver Cloud Broadway when we move to Seattle in a few days. I thought I was getting a good deal and a good chain, but some people are telling me that this hotel is in a not-so-great neighborhood. Any advice?
Thanks!

The Silver Cloud on Broadway is not downtown. It is located near Seattle Univeristy and the hospital neighborhood--about one mile from the heart of the retail core.
The neighborhood is not bad; however, I would rather stay in the downtown area to be closer to sightseeing, dining, and entertainment options.

I agree; the neighborhood is fine. It's right inbetween a very hip, busy, safe neighborhood (Capitol Hill), the hospital district on First Hill, and a neighborhood that was historically not the best but has gentrified in the last decade (the Central District). Whoever told you that was a bad neighborhood probably thought it was in the thick of the Central District, which would have been an issue 20 years ago. It's a bit less conventient to the downtown sights, but if you got a good deal there, I'd think it would be worth the short bus/cab ride (or long walk-all downhill there!) downtown. You are quite close to an excellent Italian restaurant-Osteria La Spiga-that specialized in the cuising of Emilia-Romanga, so I'd suggest that for one of your dinners. You'll need a reservation, probably. There are also many great restaurants on Capitol Hill-Lark and Crush come to mind-and you are within easy driving distance to places in the International District too, if you wanted to avoid the high priced, touristy restaurants downtown.

There is also a restaurant in the hotel and an International House of Pancakes next door.
Other good and inexpensive restaurants a few blocks north on Broadway include Pho Cyclo (Vietnamese), Siam on Broadway (Thai), El Greco (Greek), and Deluxe (pub with salads, sandwiches, more).
At Pho Cyclo I especially like the noodle bowl with grilled shrimp (#21: $6.80).
At El Greco I like the VEGETARIAN COMBO (Greek salad, hummus, zucchini cakes, and warm pita). It is very tasty and satisfying, and I'm not a vegetarian. It was $11 at my last visit, but prices are rising.
