I should mention that another reason I was willing to travel 2000 miles was that my reunion was an entire weekend, not just one dinner. There were events on Friday evening, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning, which still left plenty of free time. In addition, there was an "unofficial" Happy Hour at a local bar on Thursday evening. These once-a-month Happy Hours are still going on, 6 months later.

I still keep in touch with about 25 or 30 friends from high school but didn't go to my tenth or twentieth reunion. Honestly, I had no interest.

Marilyn, that's exactly how mine was! I think it made a world of difference in having some casual get togethers before the formal dinner event.

Informal things are good...we are doing a Friday night casual cocktail reception , the guys are planning a golf thing on Sat, then Saturday night is the big party. We just felt as so many folks were coming in, we should have more than a one night deal....

I think that's really a good idea, capri. It makes it more worthwhile for people to travel some distance.

I probably would not get on a plane for one dinner, quite honestly.

My husband and I have gone to all our reunions even tho we live about 2,000 mi away. It was well worth it. We are from two different states so two different reunions, but still lots of fun for both of us. We have maintained ties with friends from high school even tho we live a long ways away - the internet has certainly helped.

The organizers of our reunions always plan them around July 4th. We always have a great turnout because most have family to visit as well. One reunion, July 4th was a Monday. The word was spread that everyone would meet for cocktails on Friday night in the lounge of the hotel where the reunion dinner would be held and that all graduates were invited, giving us the terrific opportunity to reunite with friends a few years ahead and behind, along with brothers and sisters of grads in our class. The dinner was held Saturday night. (There's always a prize for whoever travelled the farthest, etc....) On Sunday, there was a bring your own picnic (one lucky grad had a lake on their property) and your kids. So, it was really wonderful to see everyone's kids in person (as opposed to all those photos!). But,I went to a small high school out in the countryside where everyone knew everyone else and was friendly to everyone. My husband's reunions (several towns over from where we live now), on the other hand, are a huge snooze.

Usually ,unless its your own or you know everyone there, class reunions arent all that fun.Someone suggested that no one bring their spouse at all...now THAT would be interesting!!

Been to every one...I know...no suprise that I wouldn't miss a party, yah.

Totally agree w/ the lovely Marliyn...the early one's were so full of BS but the last 2 were totally a blast.

We did a 3 day thing last time.
A "Kal-hosted" cocktail party at a local watering hole that an alumni, ex-49er owned....
Dinner/dancing and telling lies about how good we used to be on Sat and a family brunch/golf tourney Sunday morning...for those who survived.

I saw some old friends who I haven't seen since Grad night 30 yrs ago!
And even then I was seeing two of them!

Both my husband's and my class have planned 3 day events and they have been a lot of fun and we have both enjoyed each others reunions and have gotten to know lots of each other's friends from our high school days. Mine is this summer and we are both looking forward to another great time.

Kal...bet you were a blast in school..you still seem to be!! It seems so many folks have such a great time at these things..I cant imagine why so some seem to have bad attitudes about them.

Hi,
I went to my 50th HS reunion in October 2003 after finding out about it on Classmates.com. Saw the site on a pop-up and was curious.

Funny. The committee who was organizing it designed their own website and had worked for about 2 years to get it all together. And, I found out that most of the committee had never moved more than 50 miles away.
I got out the old yearbook and, sure enough, the committee was most of the folks who were the jocks, cheerleaders and "voted most likely!" I had secretly hoped the "person most likely to succeed" had been a VP at Enron or, at least, in some stock swindles and in the slammer!
As said before, it was mostly boring and I had wanted to have some dining, wining, dancing, chatting with the kids I remembered and liked. The disc jockey was horrible. Especially so, since after we had paid in advance some $200 apiece for the week-end, we were asked if we wanted live music with requests, etc. and some slow dancing to music from the 50's About 85% of the answers were yes to a live band. The question of money was brought up again and it was too expensive!! Heck, we could have got together some of our classmates who had a doo-wop band to do it for free!! 70 year olds can still doo-wop!!
A good classmate, now living in Texas, suggested a Country band with grinnin' and picken' and that was turned down at once--Wouldn't do at all to a sophisticated New York committee! And, the classmate from Texas promised the band would put on some shoes, but that was also rejected.
Turned out that the disc jockey played loud, un-dancible music
and all he did was introduce the "committe" and all 14 of them got such praise from one another and listed all the great things they had done in 50 years. People at the tables wre trying to talk--shout really to be heard-and so, the speakers talked even louder!!
I got ONE dance with my Sweetie and dinner FINALLY started to be served at 10:30 PM.
I don't know about you young folks, but I usually dine about 7--to bed by 11--so we had to take home a doggy-bag of food to the hotel room and ended up having leftovers for breakfast. Hey, don't knock it. Duck l'orange and rice is very tasty at 8 AM.
I'll probably go to my 55th, since it is only 200 miles away, but for anyone being on some committee to plan for their own, give us all a break and keep the speeches short. We had enough blathering when we HAD to sit in class for the teachers!
Cheers,
Minette
