Newsflash: The FBI has determined that it would be to risky to have the light rail system run right to the Olympic venues (ceremonies & Delta Center ice skating events). The TRAX will run to from the south part of SLC valley into downtown & around downtown, but will not deliver spectators all the way to the events.

Dayle,

Do you know of any hotels in SLC with rooms available during the Olympics? In an earlier post, Guy said he knew of some but hasn't come back here to mention which ones.

I'm in the same boat as many people out there. We bought several hotel packages that are back to back but then we ended up buying some additional tickets that require us to find a hotel for the last three nights of the Olympics. There is a Salt Lake 2002 Website that has available hotels but at present there is nothing even remotely close to Salt Lake City. Most seem to be 1 1/2 hours away. I am told that they update this Website regularly and will be adding more hotels as rooms become available. In case anyone wants to check it out......

Good luck!

Regarding these hotels...I have talked to a few of the General Mgrs. of the downtown hotels..and they say..that although they are technically booked up..they anticipate rooms being released as it get closer to the Games... Also, the Grand American is the newest hotel in downtown SLC..with some 700 new room and is opening next week..but it will be pricey. Also, I think that SLOC will start releasing rooms before all is said and done. I do have a contact who has informed me..that there are a few downtown apartments available....I know the ones he is talking about and they are located 'in downtown'...and are reasonably new and nice. Also, I have a friend who owns hotels in SLC.....and he said that although he is full..he has had some double reservations and they have cancelled..and he is hangin on to them for the time being.....One other person on this forum has been in contact with me directly..and I have told that person..I will keep her apprised of anything I find out..but feel free to contact me from time to time and I will try to pass along what I know...when I know it...Jeremy if you want to beam me up directly feel free..I know there is going to be some rooms in this town..

I work at a hotel in Park City. Like most hotels in & around the Olympic venues, our property has been completely booked by SLOC since the award of the games years ago. At this point, I would highly recommend checking with various property management companies in Park City for condo availability. There are many, many more condos than hotel rooms and there is still good availability. Condos are a good idea also, because you can cook for youself, instead of trying to get into jam-packed restaurants (many of which are already reserved for private functions/parties). The Park City Visitor's Bureau/Chamber of Commerce can point you in several directions, or log on to www.parkcity2002.com The Park City area is hosting 1/3 of the events and is only a 30 minute drive from downtown SLC. Welcome to Utah!

Jeremy, SLOC isn't releasing any of its contracted rooms yet in Salt Lake. But it will happen, so be persistant and keep trying every couple weeks. You'll get something.

I have a chance share expenses with someone at the Best Inn and Suites Motel at 1009 S Main Street during part of the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics. Has anyone ever been there? Are they in an OK part of town? Could one walk to downtown?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I have never seen that particular hotel, but I understand hotel rooms are almost impossible to come by and you should probably jump at the chance.

Main Street is one of the major streets leading to downtown and it would be possible to walk to downtown from there if you were in good shape and the weather was good. 100 South Main is in the middle of downtown - so you would be 10 city blocks away from there.

There is a light rail system but the closest stops are 400 South Main and 1300 South (a few streets west of main).

The area is not upscale, but I would feel perfectly safe in that area.

Derek. This hotel/motel is only a few blocks from my office and business.I drive past there each day. Take the room..It is quite nice and has been renovated recently. I have not been in it for quite sometime..but can easily lay to rest any concern you may have. There is a decent restraunt .albeit not gourmet..and it is about a 10 minute walk to downtown SLC or 15 minute walk to the medal ceremonies. Also, the light rail platform is within 5 minutes walking from the hotel. You got it made pal..go for it ..If you have anyother question feel free to contact me

...previous poster is correct..Light rail is withing 5-10 walking distance to the 1300 So platform..and the 400 So. platform is essentially downtown anyway..but will confirm it is only 10-15 minutes max walking. Walking distance from hotel to downtown is about 7/10 of a mile at most.

Guy,

I wonder if you have the Best Inn on 1009 S. Main confused with another motel, because this one does not have a restaurant.

..got me confused now. I am gonna get in my car and drive up there now. I am thinking it was the Old Ramada Inn which was remodeled a few years ago.. I do recall now another small motel that has been built in the same area..I will be back in 5 minutes or so as it is only 3 blocks from me...

Ok.here's the deal..The place that I was thinking of was is what used to be the Ramada Inn, and is now the Holiday Inn, and it does have a Restaraunt and I believe a Sports Bar on the lower level...BUT..located adjacent and next door to the South is the BEST INN..It was build a few years ago..and to whoever it is that asked about it..I would say it will certainly be plenty nice for the Olympics. It is a small travel motel..ala a Holiday Inn Express...looks to be 40-50 rooms. I think it will work great and I would not worry bout it.take the room...cuz rooms will be at a premium. As of now SLOC has not started to release the room blocks..you may be able to find a closer and better hotel when they do. If I were you I would take this one and worry bout finding something else later if you want..rather be safe than sorry.

I am also planning on going to the games. WHen I tried to book a hotel, I ended up about 80 miles from the city, based on room availability at that time (in April). But my hotel is only 1 mile from the bus stop, and I can take a bus almost directly to the events I'm attending outside the city, or right into downtown. It will be easier than driving, and less expensive than paying $30 for the SLOC shuttles. Just make sure youo're near public transportation and you should be fine.
