Wine Country to San Diego

Wine Country to San Diego
My husband and I are considering a trip starting in San Fran, then heading up to wine country and then back down to San Diego. How much time do you recommend in each area? We have about 11 days to travel?

I agree with ltt about SF and the wine country, but I'd add another night to Monterey, plus a night or 2 near San Luis Obispo - Cambria or Morro Bay - and then spend the rest in San Diego. Or you could do 1 night near SLO and 1 night in Santa Barbara before heading down to San Diego. I wouldn't want to do the drive from Monterey to San Diego in one day if I didn't have to. It would be a very long day and you would end up rushing through the most spectacular scenery on California.

I would do 2 nights each in SF and the Wine Country, one or two nights in San Jose, especially to see the redwoods in Big Basin, and surroundoing Silicon Valley. Definitely 2 nights in Monterey, 1 night in Cambria (Hearst Castle), 2 nights in Los Angeles and the rest of the time in San Diego.

I definately suggest making the central coast part of your wine tour. The central coast has definately established itself as a prominent Wine region, although it often is overlooked for Napa. Personally staying in Morro Bay, Cambria or Pismo Beach and touring the green hillsides there was much more fun, and less expensive at wine tasting... many of the wineries are in close proximity so one could drive/bike to them, of course the wine is so good you buy a lot more than intended.
Don't sell yourself short on a beautiful area of California.

Cometrider78, have you been to Bodega Bay? We will be going to San Francisco, Sonoma, and Bodega Bay (Lodge and Spa), 2 nights each place, in a few weeks and was wondering what you thought about Bodega Bay? Thanks.

Assuming that you're driving I'd say:
2 days in SF (carless)
2 in Wine Country
2 in Monterey
1 in Cambria so you can go to the Hearst Mansion
2 in Santa Barbara
2 in San Diego
If there were a lot of things you wanted to see in San Diego, I'd steal a night from Monterey, because you will see a lot of the coast on your way down.
If you're flying, that changes everything.
