We stayed at the Williamsburg Inn when my husband was attending a conference - room paid by his employer. It is right in the Colonial area. In addition to the Inn proper, there are also rooms located in the historic buildings. The room we stayed in was origanly the kitchen of a house (seperate building in case of fire in those days). The room was nicely decorated with reproduction furniture and had a nice bath. We really liked having our own little cottage. The main house to that "kitchen" had several bedrooms and was used for groups traveling together. You'll have to decide whether it is worth the cost. There are lots of hotel choices in the area. As to weather, December in this area can be anything from low 80's (rarely) to freezing and snow (rarely). Most likely you'll have pleasant days - high 40's to high 50's - and somewhat colder nights. By the way, I think the Williamsburg Inn rate may include your ticket to the Colonial Capital - check with them to see if that is still true. That may make it a better deal.

From what I heard, yes, its worth it. They recently renovated. Made all the rooms larger. It is across the street from the main sites and backs up to the Golden Horseshoe. It is very elegant. For a different experience look at the Kingsmill Resort. It is not as elegant but is still upscale and has a lot of amenities. By the way, we ate at the Inn last week and had a fabulous meal.

It's worth it if you want ulatra first class accommodations in the center of Colonial Williamsburg. It's not worth the price simply to be close to the restored area. Wmburg is a small town and there are plenty of hotels (all price ranges) very close to the heart of things.
Wmburg is not especially cold in December....perhaps 30's/40's in the evening and 50's during the daytime. Current forecasts are for a fairly milid winter. Folks play golf here year round.

The "Inn" is very nice, first class, as "ddd" posted. However they also operate the Williamsburg LODGE, also in the historical district, as well as "Woodlands" adjacent to visitor center and "Governors Inn" outside the restored area, but with shuttle service and easily within walking distance. You'll have great service and amenities at any of the properties.
Plenty of accomodations close by, if being close to restored area is your greatest concern.

Haven't stayed at the Inn, but I have stayed at the Lodge. We really enjoyed it. It is across the street from the Inn and an easy walk to the historical area. Our rate included breakfast at their restaurant -- choice between a buffet (hot, not continental) or anything off the menu. The Lodge has a nice lobby with a little tavern in it that is enjoyable. You also get access to the fitness center and the golf course. I think I also had a massage at the fitness center. Our room was nice, hardwood floors, period reproduction furniture, older but still okay bathroom. For the money, it was a nice place to stay.
We went to the Inn one night to have a drink in the bar. It was too stuffy for us -- we turned around and left.
